Is there a C172P with glass cockpit for flightgear ?

Postby Curtis » Wed Oct 07, 2020 5:32 pm

Hello,

currently flightgear is provided with the excellent C172P 1982 version, with the traditional style of analog dials and gauges as cockpit.

But we are in 2020, modern aircraft (including single-engine aircrafts) have now glass cockpit,

Is it possible to adapt the current C172P 1982 version by adding a 3D glass cockpit ?
Or do you know if someone has tried to develop a glass cockpit for C172P ?

Thanks.

Hello,
if you are okay with a close relative, try the c282t!
The 172 has no glass cockpit yet, afaik.

Hello Benih,

I will try your C182T :

thanks.

There are a few people that continue to develop the c172p. We have created and issue to help get that project started. I would more than likely step up and do some of the work involved. I added the glass to the j3cub/pa18. My main hold back at this moment is a consensus as to which modern, existing c172 aircraft that most resembles our base aircraft to model it from. If we do it we want it based on a real production aircraft. The c172s looks to be the one we need to recreate. I think I am a little closer as to where to start and what to shoot for. Every bit if information I see gets me closer to it.
Are you interested in helping make this happen?
If so, check out the dev thread.
It's been on my mind quite a bit so I think I might be ready to start working on it, maybe with a little help.

Hello Wlbragg,

I never created an aircraft, I am just a user,
but I can test the future alpha/beta version of glass-cockpit C172P, and try to find documentation,
I can also debug (or try) nasal scripts.

You should be able to add these to most fixed-wing aircraft without too much trouble:

I tested the cessna C182T,

unfortunately the CPU and/or GPU usage of C182T is too high for my PC (intel core 2 quad Q9650 3 Ghz, radeon HD4650 Pcie, 8 Gb ram),
I have only 12 FPS with the C182T.

With the C172P 1982 version the FPS are much higher (45).

Perhaps FG1000 (Garmin G1000) glass cockpit requires a powerful PC configuration ?
It would be interesting to tell in the wiki what are the minimal hardware requirements (CPU, GPU) in order to emulate with decent FPS ( >= 25 FPS) the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit.

Try the J3Cub and/or the PA/18 (same aircraft with different GUI configuration) with the glass cockpit and see if you loose your performance. I think you will and yes I think it is the glass FG1000. I actually removed it completely from the J3 because even having it in the background was causing loss of performance.

in general, that's certainly true - the main issue here is that the device is implemented using Nasal and Canvas, and given the complexity of the device, you will definitely need a powerful computer to run the device - on less powerful devices, I am even seeing startup times taking several SECONDS before the device even shows up.

At least in theory, it would be possible to move the device out of the main loop, and even out of the main view/window, which should free up main loop resources (frame rate/spacing).
For the time being, the Canvas system isn't designed with this use-case in mind, but the FG1000's internal architecture makes it rather suitable to be decoupled from the main loop, mainly thanks to its use of the MFD framework, and especially Emesary.

Also, even without moving things out of the main loop, the main bottleneck is our svg parser (svg.nas), using native OSG SVG support speeds up the device considerably, but that brings other issues with it: SVG parser performance (from Cessna C182T)

Background here: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Canvas_SVG

If you care about improving FG1000 performance, please consider filing a feature request.

Stuart's response is quoted below (lead FG1000 developer):

SVG parser performance (from Cessna C182T)
stuart wrote:I had a quick chat with James about this. We suspect just shifting more of the svg.nas code into C++ would provide good enough "bang for the buck" to improve the load time without needing anything more complicated.

However this isn't something either of us see as a priority right now (WS3.0 and various other things being higher priority), so we're not going to spend any time investigating further or implementing an improvement. If anyone is interested, they would be welcome to submit a patch.

I also suspect that 15s compares favourably to the startup time for a G1000 :)

Proof of concept and a decent start to making this happen.

For anyone interested in a FG1000 implementation of the c172s (SkyHawk) there is a working development version.
Also any modeling, textures and systems work gladly accepted.

This should technically say For anyone interested in a FG1000 implementation of the c172p (SkyHawk).

However, if there are any modelers interested at doing a detailed model of the newer c172sp, we would most certainly add it to the variants.
