Original Cessna 172p improvement

Postby openflight » Thu Jul 25, 2019 10:26 am

I am aware that I am starting another 'improvement' topic, but this one seems to be actually going somewhere.

As you may know, my Flight Gear One project involves using the Flight Gear version 1.0 environment for simulator flying and development of aircraft and scenery. Much work has been done, but nothing published as a full aircraft. This time I hope to change all that.

How to copy an existing aircraft (Cessna 172) and make changes to the texture. I had to do a step by step walk through as the process is not all that obvious:

Here is the image of the aircraft in FG. The basic shape is OK but based on what I see on the aircraft walk-arounds and photos of the C 172 as well as prototypes of the 3D model I may decide do create a new 3D model of the Cessna 172.

The basic model is good enough for now. First thing is to replace those seats, add a pilot and make the tires more like rubber instead of a wooden cut out. The entire plane is in .3ds format which is not store in a text format, so each animated part will have to be a separate file.

The .obj format is closer to the .ac and is human readable but materials will not show, and the airplane has to be rotate right 90 degrees in roll axis and also moved down.

Why not use the 3D model of the c172p that comes with FlightGear (that is newer versions -- e.g. 2018.3) - the 3D model should still work in 1.0.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes of course, that is what one would think, but the older model is sufficiently detailed to work on, and there are quite a few opportunities for improvement. It is a bit more of a challenge and there is greater freedom to make changes to the model.

I want to learn to develop 3D modeling skills as well, this is a good exercise. For some reason the newer FG Cessna does not load into a 3D viewer such as G3D.

Why use 1.9.1 and the earlier versions? Just curious - is it the forward compatibility issues for aircraft?

It is much easier now using the Wings 3D modelling environment and using the .3ds format that Wings 3D can export and import directly, without any errors. Editing or modifying aircraft much easier and more pleasant.

Latest additions to the Cessna 172 are : a pilot, instruments and interior colors. Interior materials need to be sorted out as some of them are not showing as expected.

I also did some cross country flights from KSJC to JSCK (Stockton), found the airport, and landed easily, it was a very pleasant flight, using the autopilot from the menu. Referring only to the ASI, ALT, and VSI without the airtifical horizon, using the outside as a reference point was much easier and more accurate. After the Mirage 2000, landing was almost too easy, though the cross wind landing at KSCK was not quite what was desired.
