FIAT G91-R1B

After about one year of modeling by Massimiliano and programming of XML by Adriano, it is time to show the current state of the development of the FIAT G91-R1B.
It is currently estimated to be 50% of development and therefore we believe it is helpful to have community collaboration.
The license we are referring to is GNU GPL 2, although we think GPL 3 is preferable, we ask for your opinion.
We would like to have a repository for the aircraft to be included in the development versions, so we ask for advice on how to operate.

We would like to have a repository for the aircraft to be included in the development versions, so we ask for advice on how to operate.

In a nutshell:

* find someone you trust who has commit access
* create a branch of the aircraft state you want to commit and point that person to it
* let him review the contribution (is the licensing okay or is there copyrighted material? is the project well-organized or are there unused and leftover files polluting the repository? is the aircraft doing dangerous and hackish things which affect other subsystems in a negative way?)
* deal with possible feedback
* once everyone is ready, see it committed
* once the repository admins are convinced that this makes sense and that you understand how to use SVN, you'll get access yourself (at which point latest you need to have a SourceForge account)

Hello everyone, I'm Massimiliano the person who is modeling the new G91 from September 2016

The flight takes place at the Zurich International Airport.
The airplane is simulated in Flightgear, this is an open source fly simulation program (Version 17.3).

The machine configuration is:
LInux MInt 18.2 with NVIDIA 1050 4GB RAM graphics card

Flightgear performance was pushed to the maximum to test the G91, currently the total size of .ac files of 51mb,
The result is encouraging.

This is the cockpit, it is now under construction, but it is still possible to get an idea of how it is coming:

For each instrument we used the original documentation, often just photographic, in order to make the instrument more exactly match the reality.
The fonts were made with a font that simulates the one actually used in those years (50-60). All quadrants have a resolution of 1024x1024 to give the highest visual quality both by looking closely and looking at the natural distance of the pilot's eyes.
In this particular PHI is still to be finished, but now has its definitive shape. The artificial horizon (J8) still lacks some detail.
The size of the gauges is remarkable, averaging about 1.5 MB for each, these in the photo were made with a CAD (Freecad) and therefore not optimized with Blender, in the future we may be able to reach them by 30%.

The same night view picture, the lighting is low, but it was just like in the original G91 (the pilots told me they were wearing a filtered red or green battery to see the instrumentation better!).
Currently the background red is obtained by means of a color that simulates the light diffused by the red lamps (6) used to illuminate the console. While the instrument was lit by two UV lamps. The phosphorescent color was green-yellow, and was set separately. The purple residue you see on the instrument panel is due to the violet residue of the UV lamps and its intensity varies with the intensity of the UV lamps and not the red ones.
Warning lamps have a filament lamp inside to improve the quality of the simulation. The diffusion effect (perhaps still too high) is done through its ALS effect also used for external lights.

Only one Small Request:

I would like to be able to dynamically modify the RGB color of individual parts in the XML code, but I did not find an explicit statement that allows this. Does anyone know how to do it?
For example, this code is used to change the light emission and ambient for a part:

How to make a medium-high quality aircraft, we will tell you about our experience.

When we wanted to build the FIAT G91-R1B, we did it with the concept of giving the FGFS community an aircraft model that was qualitatively close to the models offered (almost always paid) on X-Plane. The intent was to show that in the open source it is possible to make quality aircraft projects, in the hope that others can continue to refine the aircraft or to derive new variants using parts of the basic model.

In the project we are trying to insert new criteria and methods to increase the quality of the aircraft as explained below:

Use official documentation obtained from material available on the web and possibly free of copyright.

The documentation must be as technical as possible and made by those who designed and built the aircraft. We have noticed that the documentation found in books and magazines is often wrong! The drawings that are not the original blue-prints, have dimensions that are not always certain because the printing and / or the reduction in scale is not always well done.

The choice of the aircraft MUST be done with the availability of good documentation material, it is impossible to make a good aircraft if sufficient documentation is missing. Fortunately, many enthusiasts make a lot of material available on the Internet and often it is copyright free material. For the G91-R1B part of the material was collected by me from http://www.avialogs.com a website that is doing a wonderful job of collecting, scanning and rearranging the material for many types of aircraft.

Then I discovered that many other enthusiasts have done the same job for specific aircraft, for example the FaceBook group: PILOTI DI G91 R-Y-T-PAN https://www.facebook.com/groups/315853958496729/ is helping us a lot for learn more about the plane and explain things that the manuals do not always report, such as the true lighting of the instruments and the cockpit.

Work with greater freedom in the complexity of the 3D model.

Certainly the use of a 3D file that reports more complex objects than simple triangles or quadrilaterals, can be a great improvement if such graphic objects could be directly treated by the 3D rendering engine, but at present it is not so. But the modern graphics cards are very powerful and the memory available a lot (4-8 GB are the norm) this allows you to propose complex models in complex scenarios, as do our friends of X-Plane. So do not limit yourself to making objects with few vertices, especially for the narrowest and most visible curves! As I have often written in this forum, there are surfaces that can be quite poor at the top, but there are surfaces such as the wheels of landing gear, the analogue instruments on board, the frame on which the canopy is mounted etc, which being close to the point of view they MUST be realized in a way that does not give the sensation of being prisms and not of continuous curves as in reality.
Our criterion was simple, put many knots in order to have good surfaces and if they are too many, reduce them through the various functions that Blender makes available.
For those who do not like this criterion, continue to do as you wish, but this model has been made with this spirit and we would like no one to change this principle. The future, the continuous increase in the power of the GPU, will make this model ever lighter, delaying its obsolescence over time.

This example of the main landing gear I think can give an exact idea of the need to use many nodes to have a sufficient rendering quality:

In my opinion the results are not bad, and in any case the model is flying well even on my development PC that lacks a dedicated 3D card!

In the past years I have done several tests on the speed of execution of 3D rendering, and I have verified that the speed reduction is not always perceptible with greater complexity of the model, I noticed that the real killer of the execution speed are the NASAL and XML programs (I think it is caused by the problem of insufficient management of the multiprocessing) and some functions of the scenario (Mainly the trees ... but not the grass ...). Currently I perform the model test on a machine with Intel I7 4700 and without a dedicated video card with a speed of 10-15 frames per second with a resolution of 1024x1024.

How to start making the model

All start from the fuselage, I think it's wrong! It can be useful for a first approach, but then it is better to throw everything away and start again!

It is best to start from the objects that will have to be inserted in the fuselage, like the landing trolleys, the roof and the engine in order to generate the constraints with which to build the fuselage, the wings and the tail rudders. However it is essential that every part that composes a .ac file is never too big, on average less than 2000-3000 nodes, otherwise the loading time is lengthened too much, but this is not a general rule. Try and then eventually modify, but first try!

This approach is less gratifying, but extremely instructive and allows us to evaluate the quality of information material available to us and follows the typical criterion of aircraft designers. A designer of an airplane defines the exact dimensions of the fuselage and wing according to the organs that will be mounted inside, this does so to save time and money. If the model we build follows the same criteria we discover that modeling is simpler and more realistic!
It would always be desirable to have the design of the ribs so you can arrange things closer to reality.

We started from the front landing gear, it is complex and very compact, its constraints are stringent and we must proceed with great care:

Then we went on to model the fuselage, not the wing, as this, for the G91, can be dismantled for a quick assembly for a possible transport by plane.

For the tail of the plane, we always proceed with detached parts that will then be composed in Blender. As always we try to follow the ribs of the aircraft, also to improve the complex double curvature of the tail.

For the cockpit we have created two sets of parts, the Canopy that includes the whole cockpit and the transparent cover:

For the dimensioning of parts, manuals do not always tell us everything, often need to use pictures that some friends had us on the plane (if it exists)!

So all the plane is composed of many parts, some will be merged directly into Blender, while other parts will remain separated in different .ac files and then merged via XML. This method can cause problems for the liveries, in case those deliveries will have to work on parts, but it is enough to have patience or a program that performs the cut (I think Blender does it) that everything is back in place.

This post was made to better explain what were our development criteria in order to have the possibility of being placed in the official repository. It would be nice if someone with a good FDM JSBSim experience could give us the possibility to improve flight qualities, especially for inertia and stability in take-off and landing. At present, we continue to work on the inside and other external parts, the electricity management system and power-off, along with the addition of side panels. The current development time is close to 1.5 years, we hope to release as soon as possible the model to the whole community with GNU license 2 and later. If others can help us will surely further improve the model and add other things that at present we have not achieved. We thank everyone for their patience and for the various advice they are giving us.

That's the kind of posting ("tutorial") that would better be put into $FG_ROOT/Docs or ideally moved over to a new wiki page so that others can help update/maintain the article in the future.

Hello everyone,
I think it is right to intervene on the issue of "alleged theft" as Thorsen has wisely stated. Abassign has been directly involved and will comment on the text of Thorsen, but being me to work on 3d I have to clarify the alleged theft.

A small premise useful to introduce myself. I work in the architectural modeling sector for 12 years I use blender for about three years and I think I don’t need to take possession of a job I can not do. I say that I did not use .ac and. blend of Cobe571, my reference is only official documentation. We also all know that there are no dimensional differences between the G91R1B and G91R4 GINA.

Our model G91R1B was made for the Italian aviation, the G91R4-GINA for other NATO aircraft, including Germany and Turkey. We have based ourselves on the G91R1B as we had available the material of the Italian military aviation through the purchase, by abassign, of the related pdf from Aviolog. Declassified and public documentation.
I don't know that Cobe571 has ever published his work, he has only declared the number of vertices and faces and the names of objects
On all this there is no correspondence with our model that has been realized in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT way, each 3D modeler has his own working technique.

If Cobe571 kindly makes your model available IMMEDIATELY, we will be happy to check any coincidences and therefore to eliminate such parts.

I'm not a 3d modeler myself, but even I could within the course of a few minutes change the number of vertices without altering the mesh shape by applying smoothing to some surfaces, or change the number of objects by splitting/merging - so these do not seem good criteria for me to judge differences.

If you made the model from scratch, it's probably easy for you to produce a repository/backup history which shows a smooth continuation from rough shape to final product - I think that would be the most convincing proof, as the stealing allegation is equivalent to the claim that you have no rough early stages in your possession because you started working from a fairly advanced model.

That's incredible, but maybe in the virtual world it's like that, I should try my innocence instead of, who accuses me of proving my guilt. Thorsen is interesting and suggestive is the hypothesis to modify the 3d as proposed, in this forum there are the interested person and modelers who can try their hand in the described attempt, and maybe have their opinion. Of course I have the .blend files of the whole development, and I will reflect with abassign on what to do in absolute availability.

Good morning everyone and happy new year.
I allow myself to enter this discussion, even if I have not participated in the current project.
I just took the test flight and I'll probably do some livery ... when it's ready.
At the beginning, years ago, when it was decided in Flightgear Italy to realize the G 91, there was only Cobe571 for 3D and Abassign for the rest.
I had been busy making only some flight manuals.
Unfortunately, after years and years of "pull and spring" the project has run aground.
There have been many discussions among the developers (cobe571 and Abassign) and it was decided to finish the project .... or better ..... cobe571 has withdrawn its 3D from the development ...
After a few months, we were lucky enough to meet Mada00, a really smart and very professional guy.
In fact, he is one of the best architects of Southern Italy, while Abassing is an engineer specialized in Advisory consultant on energy technologies.
We're not talking about kids playing ....
These people, believe me, do not need to copy a model ... with their potential they can do whatever they want.
Thus, it was decided to start the project again starting from ZERO.
Cobe571 had expressed the order not to touch his model, and we proceeded to delete it from our PCs.
It was a year of hard work for Mada00 and Abassign ... we often worked until 3.00 am.
From my point of view, I have seen this fantastic G91 being created from scratch.
When I published the first video on youtube of test flights, the controversy began.
Probably cobe571 thought he could be the only one to make it .... but it is not so .... and when he saw it in the air, almost finished, he started to offend us because he probably wanted to be him to release it (his model) ....
But this is another model, with a level of attention to detail really remarkable ... Mada00 and Abassign have aimed to make the best plane of FGFS ..... and it is sad, very sad that someone tries to ruin it, muddying the reputation of humble people who just want to work.

Years ago, FGFS was a nicer place.

According to Italian law:
intellectual property is that part of the work of a creative nature protected by the law on copyright (s. 22 April 1941, n. 663), which takes on identifying feature of the work itself, so much so that the works of 'ingenuity intellectual property, while not being provided under trade marks (art. 2563 to 2569 cc) it is regarded as a true hallmark of a product, which in the case is an intellectual work. First, the intellectual intellectual works is not protected as a separate well in home making: that is, it is not eligible for protection if the intellectual property is not completed or is not yet in circulation; this also because 'in this case is missing the main prerequisite to a real risk of confusion with another original works having similar or identical title.

I tried in vain to find a link that would allow to get the job done by Cobe571 as it is essential that an intellectual work is available at the time you made a complaint. The only reference is a series of posts he has written more than a year ago in which he defined the characteristics of the object of his complaint.

The concept of Italian law but also international law, is that an author of the work may claim his paternity only when the work has been distributed. If the author of the work do not want to publish the work, then you must deposit it in a special office, in the case of Cobe571 who is Italian, was supposed to deposit the work at the SIAE (https://www.siae.it/it).

Stating that the work was to him "stolen" during the realization of the work, is an affirmation worthless as it requires an objective response. For example, an explicit relationship of cooperation that was no longer there after the present work by Cobe571, as he himself wrote:

In this post Cobe571 says the term of my association with him and so from that moment I was thrown out of work and, therefore, all the material that I have of his work will stop on that date: Mon Sep 19, 2016 10:32 pm Material it has entered has correctly included in a list made on: Wed Sep 28, 2016 12:34 pm.

As the comparison of the drawings made by Mada00, the list of parts, the size of the project, confirm that the whole thing was done in a separate way, just as it is natural for a project that uses a different 3D author. Not only that but I noticed that the project is based on a different documentation. I think there are also dimensional differences on the angles and on various objects.

Thorsten's affirmation that it is enough to vary the vertices etc ... is absolutely absurd because in this way it is possible to take his wonderful Shuttle, pass it in a hypothetical program and affirm that it is mine ... it seems too childish! The reason is simple because we are reproducing a real object. So if two 3D renderings of two different authors are well made, they MUST BE COINCIDENT in function of the object they reproduce! Therefore Thorsten statement is totally inadequate.
The Law states that the only way to assert that something is self-realization is to have it put it in a public repository so that other authors can verify the work and avoid making a plagiarism. Since Cobe571 has not made a deposit of the work and has not entered a link to reach it, here is a situation for which it can not have any claim.

Thorsten's claim that we should proceed in this way:
"If you made the model from scratch, it's probably easy for you to produce a repository/backup history which shows a smooth continuation from rough shape to final product"
I consider it correct so we have done, since the beginning of the project, a folder of DropBox (which currently contains 1.8 GB of data) that reports the project's history, if Thorsten wants to see some files tell us and we publish it so that there are no other doubts for him. It is evident that this project follows different 3D modeling parameters that are quite unusual in FGFS, criteria that I would like to see more popular in this flight simulator. I would like to stop continuing to define the ownership of a model in such a smoky and personal way, there are PRECISE international regulations, which define the paternity of work according to the fact that it has been published (we have already done some month ago...). If we want to attract new and effective developers, we need to be clear from the beginning. We must stop paying attention only to those who scream! It is necessary to pay attention only to the evidence of the facts and to the fact that the law affirms precise things just to prevent those who scream are always right!

Gentlemen, it would be wise to place yourself into the shoes of a committer. If I get a note that a 3d model has been stolen, and I allow the model to appear on the repository, it is my legal responsibility if the allegation goes to court.

Well, yes - but if you did that, I could produce a public commit history of the whole development and a written permission by the original cockpit mesh author and the photographer of the cockpit - you could do no such thing.

In this way, we'd find out. Not by counting vertices.
