To push this forward slowly but slightly more firmly, I will be making the new behaviour (proposed above) the default implementation in ATC-pie, adding a toggle option called "guess FGMS transponder modes" to revert to things as they were (making modes GND and C-vs-S undiscoverable). I will keep it as long as we see fit, but hopefully not forever.

The "dev" branch already implements this. The "xpdr" branch announced above will be discontinued as soon as dev is merged into a stable numbered version.

@mickeybadia
I'm going to push a transponder using this soon, perhaps we can test?

Sorry for the delay,
I've had a rough past few months.

Sure. You can already test by yourself using ATC-pie on the dev branch...

Make sure the radar cheat (Cheat menu) and the "Guess FGMS transponder modes" option (System menu) are both turned off. Connect the aircraft and the radar, and do not cheat or link anything. Then, things to check are:
  • transponder off shows no contact, or comes up as "P" if primary radar is activated (Options menu)
  • transponder on (any mode): ACFT body shown as a square (not a circle), i.e. XPDR properties are detected properly
  • S mode shows a full info box: callsign, type, code, altitude
  • C mode shows code + altitude;
  • A mode shows only code + "alt?";
  • ground mode shows "GND" and no code

DISREGARD.

Proposition obsolete since new properties were defined, and will be merged in coming versions. Extended S mode support to be expected then, incl. ground mode squawk and IAS transmission.
