737-800 Development (ex build the best jet in Flightgear)

Postby Pakistan-1 » Wed Nov 11, 2015 4:01 pm

I have seen that Soitanen is working on the 737-800 FMD and Systems Wouldn't it be amazing if other developers join in and make the 737-800 Comparable to the C172 Detailed project ?
From what I saw The todo list looks like this
BETTER 3D Models
Better Sounds
Better FMD
Better Cockpit
Better Textures&Liveries
I hope that the community will join in Soitanen's efforts to improve the 737 Family

I am sure your own involvement/contributions in any of those areas would be just as much appreciated

The only thing I know how to do is make liveries .

which is fine and in fact the whole idea is great - i.e. teaming up with others to implement aircraft more completey.
However, the implementation of the idea is much more difficult. To see for yourself, you can look at successful examples of working collaboration - e.g. the 777, c172p, space shuttle or even the "dragon thread".

You could look at those and analyse them to see if, how and why these projects "just work", while others - sometimes even with much more talented contributors involved (just look at the Su-15) are failing in comparison (in terms of collaboration).

In other words, you don't need to become a programmer or a 3d modeler to team up with others - and even if all you ever want to do is creating liveries or doing 2D artwork, you can still figure out how to team up with others - but you will need to get involved in their projects, too - e.g. someone like Thorsten may not enjoy doing a space shuttle livery, but may very well have a set of skills that you are not interested in learning.

I suggest to check out the wiki and its article on contributing/volunteering, to see why/how certain efforts are working, while others are failing in terms of collaboration

Best to grab a piece of code and start doing things on your own, even if you have no programming background, XML is hardly rocket science, anyone who can handle speech and counting can learn it ( compare reverse Polish XML in FSX and you'll be thankful for our implementation )

Remember, even a simple contribution in XML moves the whole project ahead simply by releasing other contributors and their time for more challenging tasks.

Don't be shy, even if you meake mistakes, open that wiki and do something :)
Ongoing projects(3D modelling): A320, MD-11, A350, B767

this may seem funny at first, but it's an extremely impressive example for highly effective collaboration, without any existing stuff - so the whole thing was prototyped, and literally bootstrapped, within just a few days.

So there is tons to be learnt from such threads, especially because this is kinda unprecedented, i.e. all the development took place within a few weeks, and apparently there was not much behind-the-scenes networking using other channels (private mail, devel list) - so this is could serve as a good role model for anybody interested in learning more about effective collaboration.

In fact, you could get involved in this to help with texturing (aka liveries)

As soon as someone can make a good 3D model for the exterior and a Paintkit to match it I will be able to start working on the liveries

Pakistan-1, I saw your try in sound contribution. It will be ok, if you will do the same just without engine sounds. Other sounds are almost the same with 733, so I'll wait for your new merge request.
Boeing 737-300. Reworked cockpit, FDM, autopilot and much more. WIP.
Boeing 737-800. WIP. Canvas PFD and ND.
Antonov An-24B. Made from scratch. Very good FDM. 3D model by Adrian. WIP.
Project Russia (some cities, based on OSM with custom objects).

But the 737-300 and 737-800 have almost the same engines

Yes, but sound is different. A320 have almost the same CFM56, but different sound from theese two airplanes.

I added new code to make random splashes but the Aircraft is no longer Showing in FG now :(
Original code in set.xml
Code (): Select all
<startup>
<splash-texture>splash-800.png</splash-texture>
</startup>

The new code
Code (): Select all
<!-- Splash screens. One is randomly chosen when FlightGear starts -->
<startup>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/737-800/splash/splash.png</splash-texture>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/737-800/splash/splash-1.png</splash-texture>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/737-800/splash/splash-2.png</splash-texture>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/737-800/splash/splash-3.png</splash-texture>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/737-800/splash/splash-4.png</splash-texture>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/737-800/splash/splash-5.png</splash-texture>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/737-800/splash/splash-6.png</splash-texture>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/737-800/splash/splash-7.png</splash-texture>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/737-800/splash/splash-8.png</splash-texture>
</startup>-texture>splash-800.png</splash-texture>
</startup>

Thanks in advance
