Heads up, the c172p has been given a nice little face lift.

Some of the more obvious additions and corrections...

Numerous mesh corrections, there were several parts of the mesh that were messed up.
Tail redesign.
Rudder redesign.
Livery corrections and realignments.
Several miscellaneous UV map corrections.
New recessed fuel caps on the wings.
Front windshield redesign to allow for proper vent fittings.

I'm not sure when the new work will show up in fgaddon but you can get it from the development repository as soon as it is all reviewed, approved and merged with master which hopefully will be in a day or two.

@gilbertohasnofb
Thank you!
However credit where credit is due, if not for your eagle eye and the time it takes to discover, explain and then follow through on all these issues we would still be looking at the same old aircraft.

Always a team effort, thank you!

Just pushed some more work to dev repo including...

Thicker wings including more rounded leading edge.
Taxi and landing light refactoring.
Tie-down connections on the wing look a little more realistic.
New trim wheel texture for better viability.

@Thorsten
The trim wheel had the interior shadow effect applied to it but I had to remove it because when you rotated the dial it would turn dark (I assume shadowed). So dark it really wasn't viable to use the interior shadow on it. Is there anything that can be done about this type of object, one that has faces that are rotated from a shadow to light? I removed the shadow effect and only have ra-radiance and model-interior applied to it so it looks OK, just no interior shadow.
The one thing that puzzles me though is the abruptness of the change from light to dark instead of what one might expect, that as you turn the wheel you see the shadow edge come into view until it is turned enough that it is all shadowed. But that isn't the case here, it suddenly changes a disproportioned amount all at once.

Generally I'd try to shade them 'flat', i.e. assign a light value halfway between lit and unlit. In that what it's always somewhat wrong but the contrast is never pronounced and one can usually get away with it.

But that isn't the case here, it suddenly changes a disproportioned amount all at once.

Does it have a more complex transformation than 'just' the rotation? That would be the first suspicion coming to my mind - because if so it would not behave in the way you think when a shadow is assigned.

Was this in time for the 2018.1 release, gsagostinho?

I look forward to flying more with the 172!

Unfortunately not, it was a lot of work and there was no way of getting it done in time. We also plan to tackle some other standing issues related to the 3D model in the near future, so that hopefully the next release will have a much better aircraft. But all new fixes are available in our repository if anyone wants to try them out :)

but it can still be released in FGData even though it wasn't finished in time... releasing it now means it will be available for the next but it is also possible to cherry pick it so tht any bug fixes to FG will bring it along, too...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

@wkitty42 we still plan to do a lot of 3D modifications including a huge rework of the cockpit, so I don't think it would make sense to push it to FGData at the present moment. Given how easy is to use our repository, I think that there should not be too much rush for that. As soon as the work is done, and this will hopefully be soon, then we will certainly ask for a new merge to FGData.

Wow great job

Thanks @GabrielYV, we're working hard at identifying areas that need attention and improving them.

Next up, more realistic flap rotation...
