WIP: Short S.23 'C'-Class flying boat

Postby AndersG » Wed Nov 12, 2008 10:52 pm

Just wanted to announce that my Short S.23 'C'-class Empire flying boat has reached some kind of flyable beta stage. I think the hydrostatics for the hull are a first for FlightGear (the hydrodynamics OTOH are still incomplete).

Preview for FlightGear/CVS

[EDIT]Links removed 2010-08-10, see post below for the current status.[/EDIT]

(Note: there is risk of running into missing files unless you have a complete data checkout. The error messages should give a hint on which aircraft you need to pull if you don't have them.)

To get out of the water make sure to fly straight - plowing along sideways through the water increases the resistance. (Yes, currently every surface is treated as water :)

[EDIT]I should mention that most of the instruments are from the Spitfire IX. The store of great looking ready made instruments in FlightGear makes cockpit creation a pleasure.

Latest update: 2008-11-22.
[/EDIT]

Cheers,

Anders

A flying Boat which is Welcome
Congratulations Anders

Will you get profit of the Boeing314 FDM about the hull ?
to me, it is very accurate.

These really fantastic instruments were kindly provided by ajm. They were made from photos of the original instrument.
He also helped me a lot on the panel of the beaufighter and the mosquito.

Many thanks to him!

Yes, I have used some data from the Boeing 314, but I need to reformat it more than I have done so far since it uses aerodynamic properties while I have created hydrodynamic ones (so we could e.g. have wind and current in different directions). The hulls are fairly different too. I have much left to do there.

Cheers,

Anders

Do you mean that we will have an addition within JSBSim itself , an "hydroynamics" chapter ( vs the "aerodynamics" ), or only like now, the usage of data ( table/tabledata ) with betters values according to your Flying boat and some functions which could simulate the current (speed and direction) according FG external property ( vs wind direction and speed)

Hi Anders,

I've wondered for a while whether there is a C-Class for FG and it looks like you've created one. Do you have a model for public distribution? I'd be very grateful if you did as my Great Great Uncle Frank was Imperial Airway's Chief Steward and died when Capricornus flew into a hill near Macon on her maiden flight.

Many thanks,
Alex

Hi,

Yes, the aircraft is part of the development version of FlightGear since a week and will be part of the next release. The current version will not work in FlightGear 2.0.0 without some changes but there is an old archive here:
http://www.gidenstam.org/FlightGear/.images/Short_Empire/old/ that ought to work in FlightGear 2.0.0.

[EDIT]Since the development version has reached a useful state I might make a 2.0.0 backport archive if there is interest and I find someone to test it on 2.0.0 (which I don't have installed anywhere).
Preliminary back-port archive:
http://www.gidenstam.org/FlightGear/.images/Short_Empire/Short_Empire_FG2.0.0.tar.gz

It depends on the following aircraft so install them first (all available from http://www.flightgear.org/Downloads/aircraft-2.0.0/):
http://mirrors.ibiblio.org/pub/mirrors/flightgear/ftp/Aircraft-2.0.0/Boeing314_1.3.zip
http://ftp.linux.kiev.ua/pub/fgfs/Aircraft-2.0.0/Spitfire_20100227.zip
ftp://ftp.kingmont.com/flightsims/flightgear/Aircraft-2.0.0/spitfireIX_20100216.zip
[/EDIT]

Cheers,

Anders

I might as well post an image or two to show the current state of affairs:

Thanks for posting that up, it's a great looking model.
Hopefully I will have some free time this afternoon to load it on my FG machine and give it a try.

Hi,

I have made a preliminary back-port archive for 2.0.0, but it has not been tested in 2.0.0 yet:

Oops! Sorry Anders, it crashes 2.0 for me on load. The old version linked above would load and fly, but the model wasn't visible in 2.0. Just FYI.

Thanks, for the old one the problem is probably a missing model, it depends on the Boeing 314, Spitfire IIa and Spitfire IX.

Did you get any useful error message from the new one? Did you try --disable-real-weather-fetch - it is frequently but not always a problem?

[EDIT]
One problem found and solved. It is reported to load in 2.0.0 now. A new version has been uploaded.
[/EDIT]

Cheers,

Anders
