Update to DHC6 FGADDON Commit r5629

Postby Simworld2020 » Wed Mar 17, 2021 6:53 am

[Edit #1, March 23]

@DG-505
Jonathan, this mod is withdrawn for the moment (removed from dropbox also).
I found some synchronization bugs and believe I have fixed them all in the PirateAir version.
I'm going to put them in the commit version just to test them there, and if
they work properly I'll submit a new dropbox link here for the FGADDON/commit version.
Thanks!

@DG-505

Jonathan,

The following update was applied to the commit [r5629] version.
The update changes the F12 radio dialog box. With this update:

1. DME and MKR volume can be controlled from the dialog box.
2. For visual feedback of volumes, each radio now has a textbox showing the numeric value of its volume.
3. The KMA20 audio panel can now be controlled from the dialog box.
4. Changes to the KMA20 from the 3D cockpit are reflected in the dialog box.

The Dropbox link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4tr6vszwwc9r493/DHC6_Commit_r5629_Update_March17_DIALOG.zip?dl=1

The MD5 Checksum: 6DB543B1139F4FA09FC2A74AC570E20A

I don't know much about the commit process. Can this update be injected into the process at this time?
Or from now on should I wait until updates appear in the FGADDON hangar before submitting additional updates?

Thank you,

John

PirateAir Twin Otter mod/update

Postby Simworld2020 » Sat Mar 20, 2021 3:03 pm

[Edit #2, March 23]

I believe I have perfected these mods, here is the new dropbox link and new checksum:

MD5: 872AD267B7AB37C2FED6CC20DD0D39B8

All previous mods for the SurferTim/PirateAir Twin Otter have been cleared out of my dropbox account.
This concludes my adventure in modding this version of the aircraft, it now has everything I wanted in the
cockpit for IFR fun from both seats. I hope others might enjoy the mods too.
Thanks for looking,

[Edit #1 - March 20] Updated dropbox link and MD5 Checksum and image, re: missing file replaced, and bug fix.
Known issue/TODO: Some synchronization issues between dialog box info and audio properties.
Any future updates to the mod will be posted here in this post as edits, thanks!
[End edit #1]

Hello to all
The linked zip file is to:

1. fix some errors from earlier mods,
2. include PTT support.
3. Change COM and NAV radio tooltips to show "MHz" and "KHz" instead of "sby", a great help in a dark cockpit.
4. Enhance the F12 radio dialog box.

This mod includes and bugfixes all previous mods I've posted.
All original files are backed up with the extension ".20MarchBAK".

Hi,
I have flown the Twin Otter last wednesday, and, after using autostart, I had the issue that the NAV/COM frequencies were not displaying at all.
I consider that a bug, however the lights were not switched on. Without lighting switched on, I would have expected at least a dim display - or is it really "black" in real life?
Also, i think it would be a very good thing to enable some lighting when using the autostart function.

Have not flown the Twotter in a long time, but have to agree.

Three knobs on the overhead panel set the instrument lighting level: Pilot, engine, copilot/radios.
All the panel lighting on my version has "memory". Set it and forget it.
Well, except the fight compartment light. It comes on when autostart is used, and I have to turn it off. I haven't changed it because it is handy at night
The radio and copilot lights are controlled by one knob. It's labeled on the overhead panel that way.

@SurferTim: I agree that it is easy to change. It is not, however, easy to find that knob for new Pilots to that plane.

New pilots are, I think, among the prime audience for the autostart feature.
I would expect the "autostart" to put the plane in a flyable, ready for takeoff, mode; which includes imho not needing to fiddle around with some lighting knobs.

Is that the only complaint? I'm not certain how to set a default setting for a first start, and a memory setting for subsequent starts.

How about the Garmin GPS? It is unreadable on the 2020.x.x versions for Ubuntu. I have to compile a special version of FG to use it.

How about the landing lights? ALS landing lights kinda suck. Isn't there a new lighting method other than Rembrandt and ALS? Compositor is it? Does it light more than just paved areas?

How about the autopilot? The aircraft does a little dance every time it is engaged. I've gotten used to it.

I am not a member of the FG development team, just a user. If you wish to modify the Twin Otter, go to it. All the corrections I made are available to the public domain for changing the DHC-6 in the official hangar. I have nothing to do with it, just the DHC6-300+. That version is my fav. I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner.

Edit: ...and that is just the wheel version. The float version autostart causes an engine failure if used in the water. You can't use the APU, only battery.
I guess I should mention here that to steer the float version in the water, the landing gear must be down.
But to takeoff or land on water, the gear must be retracted and the intake deflectors deployed. Neither is done by autostart.

Nope. Not fixed. I checked FG 2020.3.8 last week. Still has the same problem with that and, as you know, other panel display colors.

Edit: I quit mentioning it because wkitty42 has a meltdown and says "You'll know when it's fixed!". I guess we all will.

if the issue with the Garmin GPS as mentioned here is the same as the 'white text/digits' issue in the A320 then i have good news for you surfertim. next has a fix applied (simgear). i think it just hasn't been backported to the 2020.3 branch.

no, i don't have a ""meltdown""... it simply gets annoying to see the same questions/statements posted by the same individuals all the time... especially when the question/statement has already been responded to and clarified ;)
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Thats fixed in 2020.4.x. I recombiled 2020.4 one week ago and on the Citation II the text on the FMS is green again.

Compositor is the way to go on 2020.4 and it works. Have a look at the Citation II (or some other aircraft that includes also Compositor lights already).

SurferTim wrote in Mon Jul 26, 2021 10:59 am:How about the autopilot? The aircraft does a little dance every time it is engaged. I've gotten used to it.

Thats a fault of the control loops of the autopilot inside the DHC6. Has nothing to do with FG it self.
Maybe the DHC6 make use the generic AP of FG, but everybody know that this generic AP is more a prove of concept.

We all started as users ;). The best way is to contact the original author of that aircraft. A nice and friendly cooperation is the best way to improve aircrafts in the default hangar.

The behavior of autostart and the sequence what happens after what, will be mostly controlled by a script.
The behavior of the gears in water is related to float types. If the floats have extendable water rudder for steering, there should be a lever to extend/retract the water rudder. Maybe thats not fully implemented?
