C-5 Galaxy Initial Release

Postby jonbourg » Sun Sep 02, 2012 11:43 pm

Hello Everyone,

Here is the initial release of the C-5 Galaxy. Check out the aircraft help for what buttons do what. There is no cockpit, crewbunk or passenger area yet. I'd like to give a big shout-out and thanks to N-Scot for doing the paint schemes.

It definitely needs improvements. The FDM is very, very weird.

How? Can you be more specific?

Nevermind, it is weird. I took a look at the FDM settings and I had the AERORP (now 107.31 feet) & CG (now 111.70 feet) setup wrong. It flies better, but seems to pitch up all the time now. Back to the drawing board, I suspect I'll have to make some changes for the t-tail.

I added wheel rotation to the C-5, man it looks cool to see all 28 tires moving!!! :lol:

I'll post an update soon, still pitches up, but seems manageable, will need a little more tweaking.

Can you discuss how you got the loading jacks to work in the FDM. I've developing a large Russian transport with a YAsim fdm and I'd like to implement the support jacks for the ramp when lowered.

Simple Brute Force! I named every object above the wheels and did a translate animation. It has to be the first animation because all other actions are dependent on it after it is lowered. The C-5 has three different kneeling modes, but I chose to only do one of them. I also had to do some new names in the doors.nas file to have the keyboard buttons activate it. That's about it. Hope that helps!

Here's the Code, this is in the model xml file right after the livery selection:

Code: Select all
<!-- ************************************     OBJECTS FOR KNEELING   ************************************** -->
   <animation>
        <name>KneelAC</name>
      <!-- ********************************     CARGO BAY OBJECTS      ****************************************-->

I almost forgot, here is the latest version with the rolling wheels and updated CG location. Still tends to pitch up, but is flyable, I highly recommend a joystick for control.

Here's the latest version. Has a crewbunk, passenger compartment, cockpit, TF-39 engines (not all of these are selectable, but the models are there) and some other fixes, but still a work in progress.

It's looking great. Can someone on multiplayer drive a vehicle into it? Thanks!

In my opinion, after more than a year, an update can be done... or not? :)

I've done some work on it I can't remember everything, but here it is. The crew ladder works and I added a couple views. Oh yeah, just looked at the model and forgot to mention the air intakes on the TF-39's, they open now. Also did some work to clean up the cockpit model. I got away from planes for a while and did some scenery work. Fly the Galaxy from KOFF and check it out! Cheers!

I tested it and it doesn't work well.
It takes too long to take off, and when I enabled the AP, ti started to go down and crashed.
I think you can improve it. :wink:

you do realize that this topic is over 2 years old, right? i suspect the craft is also way behind the times, as well... especially with the new updates available in the newer versions greater than 3.0.0 or whatever was available at the end of 2014 ;)
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
