MSFS Models

Postby julianjackson1 » Thu Mar 27, 2008 10:28 pm

Hey guys,

I was wondering if it is possible to import 3d models of aircraft from MSFS to flightgear. I have heard it done before, so i'm pretty sure its possible.
If you know if it is possible and how to do it please post here.
Thanks,

Julian

Hi Julian,

it is possible, but with some disadvantages.

1. You can load the model into FlightGear, but you won't be able to animate anything in it (Propellers, gear, control surfaces...)

2. The FDM (Flight Dynamics Model needs to be created from scratch as the MSFS one doesn't work in FlightGear.

3. There is a possibility to exprort a .mdl Model to a Blender compatible 3D Format for Animation, but the Model has to be completely reorganized, which is nearly as much work as creating a new Model.

4. The License issue. If you convert a model, you need the permission from the author to release it under the GPL, or the model can never be included in a FlightGear Release or on the Download page.
