Development: Lockheed Model 10 Electra [now on gitorious]

Postby i4dnf » Wed Jan 12, 2011 12:27 am

Since there was some interest in this in another thread, and also was on my radar as one of the planes I'd like to model, I started the modeling of this famous bird.
Too bad that for such a famous bird, technical references are pretty scarce :(.
This is how the outside looks so far. Of course this is the easy part, the hard one will begin once the outside is done.
More info on the plane on Wikipedia

Of course, if anyone has any references, manuals, interiour pics, they are very needed and welcome. :)
Hopefuly, with your help, I'll be able to get it to the level of the IAR ;)

If you want, I can send you my modified DC2 files that I was using to create my pseudo 10E, where I have already changed most of the performance specs to the 10E, but the mods I need to do to these files is still incomplete. Be aware that the 10E was a rare model that incorporated higher HP engines than the A-D.

You may want to borrow from the DC2 as it is a nice model, fairly similar but about twice the size and weight.

Ehe, there's still a long way before worrying about a FDM. Thanks for the offer :).
I plan on doing all the major variations, because, at least from what I can see they vary mostly in the engines used. At least on the outside. Except of course the prototype and the first 5 A's that had the reverse-sloped windshield (hope I'll get around to model that too, as that would look pretty interesting :) both from the outside and the inside).
Earhart's plane would need a different cockpit/interior, and also would have to account on all the other modifications that were done (more fuel tanks, different weight distribution etc...).

Yeah, I've found some other photos of CF-TCC, some of them with great detail.
The other 2 sources you found are really nice, too bad they're of the Model 12 (Electra Junior) :(, which seems to be the plane of choice for the movie incarnation of Amelia Earhart's plane :(.
Thanks anyway, maybe when I finish this one I'll do the 12 ;) (anyway, the first one is great as a reference for the gauges, and other cockpit controls).

Today, she took her maiden flight. ;)
Animations are almost done, next comes texturing.

She looks great! - I can't wait to see how good she'll look with textures. :)

That's an aircraft I really wait for- I like flying like in old days without much technic.
And especially as it will be in the same quality like the IAR80! Can't wait! :D

Updated first post with link to live snapshots from gitorious.org.

Not supported on flightgear <=2.0.

Features .dds normalmap for increased bump shader quality.

Primarly aimed at early testers, and livery makers.
(if anyone is interested: say so and I'll setup a repo with just the .svg paintkits).
have fun ;)

Great, and thanks for this preview! :D

I noticed two things: in Models/Lockheed-L10-Electra.xml the path to the Engines should be:
Code: Select all
<path>Aircraft/Lockheed-L10-Electra/Models/Engines/wasp-jr-SB/engine-left.xml</path>

and
Code: Select all
<path>Aircraft/Lockheed-L10-Electra/Models/Engines/wasp-jr-SB/engine-right.xml</path>
otherwise it won't find the engine-xml, at least here on win32.

And the bumpmap isn't working. I noticed that you used a DU/DV-map instead the usual normalmap like the c172p or EC130.

Otherwise a very well modeled aircraft! :D Have to do some test flights right now!

Hmm, that's strange, here on linux it expands the paths as it should.
Maybe that's why the bump isn't working too..
I'll expand the paths to all referenced files.

re: normalmap
It's not DU/DV, but due to the vertical flip caused by the .dds, I had to flip the X too in the gimp normalmap plugin, and maybe that's why it looks funny. ;)
