"real" shadow within Aircraft and Scenery

Postby grtux » Thu Aug 19, 2010 10:12 am

Hi,

With FG 1.0.0 we had realistic shadows with our Models.
Now, since we are using the great tool OSG we don't have that realistic effect , however OSG is able to process such feature for instance look at that example from OSG application.

What must be done to get the same with FlightGear ?

Cheers

Gérard

PS: i know, today, there is some models which are using an old tricky effect which was originally developed on the Bo105 when there was nothing with FG ( before FG 0.9.9 )

Shadows in OSG are usually done via shaders and multiple rendering passes that would interfere with the current effect framework. Shader composition doesn't exist yet, so we can't simply use the OSG shadow framework and hope it would work. Moreover, FG use multiple cameras in a single view, and can also do multiscreen rendering. All these features are not supported by stock OSG classes and that should be reimplemented the FG way, and no one publicly tackled this task yet.

I think "Adding OSG shadows" was added to the "Google summer of code" ideas page (see wiki), if you have any ideas or suggestions (or just links) I would consider adding those there.
