what version of what? FG? always try running the latest... older versions are not supported and if you go too far back, they won't even be able to get to the scenery or additional aircraft... with that said, 2020.3.13 is the current LTS (Long Term Support) Release version...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

It is hard to recommend one set of settings that will give you the FPS you want, because it depends not only of the specific combination of OS, CPU, GPU, RAM and disk you have, but also of what other applications you are running, what aircraft you fly at which location, etc. … So, you just got to try changing the settings in Menu->View->Graphics Settings -> Select "Custom" as profile -> Advanced settings, putting the sliders to the left will reduce graphics quality and increase frame rate. Also you can try flying in light scenery such as Scotland, instead of Keflavik or Frankfurt for example, and use light aircraft like the Cessna 208B instead of the Cessna 172P or 182S / T or airliners.

P.S.: Also you can reduce the LOD ranges in Menu -> View -> LOD settings - that can greatly improve the frame rate, at the cost that only a small area of scenery is loaded - so the terrain might stop before the horizon / visibility border.
