Weird graphics artifacts with FG git next

Postby TheEagle » Mon Nov 08, 2021 10:02 pm

I built FG from git (the next branch) a few days ago, and was shocked when I tried it out with my favorite Cessna 208B "Grand Caravan" from FGAddon:
Image
Notice the hole in the terrain (which only looks like one) …

Image
… and the cut-through cloud. Additionally, the propeller transitions to a black color in about 1 sec when I pause the simulation, then hops back to transparent when I unpause the simulation. The transparent propeller has the model-transparent effect assigned.

But what is worse - when I for example switch the view from cockpit to helicopter, I get a composite image of the panel and the outside for the duration of one frame, or two (yes, a framerate of < 10 is normal for me). And when I pause the simulation, then minimize FG, then open it again, I get black color instead of terrain for a frame or two. I tried turning ALS on and off, which did not change anything. I experienced none of these bugs in the latest AppImage 2020.4.0.

My graphics specs:
  • nVidia GeForce 520M
  • Proprietary drivers version 390.144
If you need any more information please let me know.

P.S.: I must admit that I am using the 2020.4.0 FGdata together with a git next executables build - do you think this could be the cause ? sorry, but I did not succeed in getting the latest FGdata as git always shows me a timeout at about 60 %.

Good possibility that is the issue. You really need matching data to know for sure.

once you have FGData from git, you should keep it so normal "git pull" updates it much much faster... if you are having to pull a complete FGData git, get it from the official git mirror and not sourceforge... once you have it from the mirror, then you can adjust the origin to point to SF and pull all your updates from there... i cannot provide the instructions for doing this ATM but i will try to do so tomorrow if you remind me... i take the basic ones from the dnc script and piece them together into scriptable command lines you can type/paste in...

In order to get a complete clone from sourceforge, use a registered account. They have limits in place for anonymous downloads and a clone of fgdata nearly always hits these limits.

As wkitty42 says, you only run "git clone" once. Next time, you run "git pull" and it is much, much faster.

In any case, if I understood correctly, you have these glitches during transitions from pause to running, and at the same time you usually have low FPS. I believe this is just your system not being able to be up to the task. Keep in mind this is just a guess, and not even an educated guess.

No, the holes in scenery and clouds are also there when I don't pause and when I fly in light scenery with frame rates ~ 15.

Well, I'm an idiot … Using FGData from Git next also resolved all issues. Thanks for the tip !

I tried what you said wkitty, but even with the GitLab URL I am getting a timeout after it downloaded about 2.5 GB. Worst is that Git removes everything - you cannot resume your download, instead you have to start all over again and get a timeout again. I was able to download the FG files through a SourceForge snapshot - but that didn't include the Git files.

In that case maybe try to convert the downloaded data into a git repository with 'git init' and then 'git remote add' an url of a remote git repo to track.

that's really strange... one of the main purposes of creating the mirror was to work around the SF limits when pulling such a large repo for the first time...

TheEagle wrote in Wed Nov 10, 2021 12:26 am:Worst[sic] is that Git removes everything - you cannot resume your download, instead you have to start all over again and get a timeout again.

this is because you are not downloading one file like a zip... if one file changes between the time you start and timeout, then the whole list has to be built all over again...

i would not expect a snapshot to include the .git data files... i know there is a way of doing this... i just don't know the best direction to point you in... there was a torrent available at one time but i don't remember who was maintaining it or where it was available from...

out of curiosity, what is your internet speed? that may play a large part in this problem but that's just a guess, too...

Yeah, probably my internet speed is he problem - sometimes I get up to 2.5 MByte/s, but yesterday I got only 1 Mbyte/s.

OK, on an unstable link 'wget' is your friend (or 'curl', if you so prefer).
This should do the trick:
Code: Select all
$ wget -c -t0 -T30 http://server/path/file_you_want

(see 'man wget' for options meaning)

that won't work for git urls, though, MariuszXC... good idea but that dog just won't hunt...
