Resolution with FGPanel

Postby iandmacp » Sat May 22, 2021 11:20 am

Hello Fellow Aviators ...
I have been using FGPanel for several years and I love the flexibility ... I'm wondering though if there are native limits to the resolution that is achievable. I have tried a number of different approaches including doing the artwork in 512x512 pixel .svg Inkscape files then exporting them as .png's. I then scale them in the *panel_layout.xml file to the size for the panel. The large instruments seem to display ok (see below) but the small ones are coming out quite ragged. I'm running Suse Linux on the instrument computer with a pretty good spec NVIDIA graphics adaptor and have installed the correct drivers ... the display itself runs high res graphics no problem until I start FGPanel and it then seems to revert to a quite coarse resolution.

Any pointers welcome.

Cheers, Ian

James Turner developed a Qt-based Canvas variant (reimplementation) of FGPanel which is called "FGQPanel" - given that it's Canvas based, it should support vector images, and as such you should be able to use arbitrary SVG images (and resolutions) - the whole thing being Qt based, makes it rather likely that FGQPanel has far more sophisticated SVG support than FlightGear has.

For pointers and details, refer to the devel list (archives) or the wiki.

Thanks Hooray ... from a newbies point of view it seems like it will do the job. Maybe for another day ... getting this lot to work properly was a fairly big job!

Cheers, Ian
