Graphics issues like: bad framerates, weird colors, OpenGL errors etc. Bad graphics ar usually the result of bad graphics cards or drivers.
Forum rules
In order to help you, we need to know a lot of information. Make sure to include answers to at least the following questions in your initial post.

- what OS (Windows Xp/Vista, Mac etc.) are you running?
- what FlightGear version do you use?
- what graphics card do you have?
- does the problem occur with any aircraft, at any airport?
- is there any output printed to the console (black window)?
- copy&paste your commandline (tick the "Show commandline box on the last page of FGRun or the "Others" section on the Mac launcher).
- please upload a screenshot of the problem.

If you experience FlightGear crashes, please report a bug using the issue tracker (can be also used for feature requests).
To run FlightGear on old computers with bad OpenGL support, please take a look at this wiki article. If you are seeing corrupted/broken textures, please see this article.

Note: If you did not get a reponse, even after 7 days, you may want to check out the FlightGear mailing lists to ask your question there.

Low fps

Postby Lars0817 » Thu Apr 16, 2020 7:32 pm

Hello everyone, I was using flightgear and I noticed my fps is really low using the 777. On max graphics setting I get 25fps on min settings 31fps. When using the standard 737, I get 56 max on min settings. I don't have temperature problems nor power supply problem. Every setting imaginable is set to performance and no V-sync or fps throttling.

I'm using windows 10
Flightgear 2019.1.2
Nvidia GTX1060 6GB Intel I7 8750H 8th gen
16gb of RAM

Does anyone know how to fix it?

Hi,
With a Nividia high performance card - turn Atmospheric Light Scattering to ON - that generally is more efficient than default on Nividia cards.

Make sure overlay and urban shaders are completely turned off - they are the most expensive by far (due to how geometry shaders work).

Just trying to make sure the obvious is out of the way first :)

I turned ALS on again, the shaders are still off, unfortunately no difference in performance

Cinema standard is 24 fps.
This is sufficient to produce smooth video for a human observer.
However , within Flightgear we have dynamic simulations e.g. undercarriage reactions, some autopilot functions, which require much higher frame rates to produce stable results.
In general your 25 fps should be adequate and, unless you are looking at the frame rate indicator, everything should be OK.
Are you seeing any visible effect with this frame rate degradation?
In the last few days some patches have been made which may also resolve your problem.

Yeah, the biggest low fps becomes is visible, especially at moments when fps gets even lower during landings and such

Both my CPU and GPU don't seem to go above 50% usage

There was a bug in latest development version (2019.2.0) that has been resolved (see Stuart's reaction in the 'severe performance issues' thread on the mailing list), but I don't think 2019.1.2 should be affected since the bug only occured since change in October.

After cleaning my main storage disk, flightgear gets around 60 fps on full settings with the 777
