Low frame rate

Graphics issues like: bad framerates, weird colors, OpenGL errors etc. Bad graphics ar usually the result of bad graphics cards or drivers.
Forum rules
In order to help you, we need to know a lot of information. Make sure to include answers to at least the following questions in your initial post.

- what OS (Windows Xp/Vista, Mac etc.) are you running?
- what FlightGear version do you use?
- what graphics card do you have?
- does the problem occur with any aircraft, at any airport?
- is there any output printed to the console (black window)?
- copy&paste your commandline (tick the "Show commandline box on the last page of FGRun or the "Others" section on the Mac launcher).
- please upload a screenshot of the problem.

If you experience FlightGear crashes, please report a bug using the issue tracker (can be also used for feature requests).
To run FlightGear on old computers with bad OpenGL support, please take a look at this wiki article. If you are seeing corrupted/broken textures, please see this article.

Note: If you did not get a reponse, even after 7 days, you may want to check out the FlightGear mailing lists to ask your question there.

I also find that ALS improves my FPS as well (I'm running AMD graphics)

Code: Select all
Motherboard: Intel DP45SG (LGA 775)
CPU: Intel Xeon X5450 @ 3.00GHz (Quad core)
Ram: 8G 1333 MHz
Graphic: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

This looks decent.

I can add the data point that for the Shuttle, the graphics card is usually not the bottleneck because the systems simulation is fairly CPU heavy (and there's not much scenery in space that demands rendering...)

The above spec is in fact better than on my older computer - which runs the Shuttle with 20+ fps (okay, I have eight cores, but they're slower, and FG isn't good in utilizing multi-cores).

So this is likely some weird config issue.

In my case disabling ALS make no difference...

What about the things I mentioned in my post. It is also worth checking how well eg the c172p runs, or even the UFO?

I did a little testing...

1) started at LIPE with aircraft ufo, everything else disabled (ALS, 3D Clouds, etc...) only basic scenery and ambient active --> 60 fps;
2) started at LIPE with aircraft c172p, everything else disabled (ALS, 3D Clouds, etc...) only basic scenery and ambient active --> 30 fps;
3) started at LIPE with aircraft c172p, with 3D clouds and ALS enabled --> 25 fps;
4) started at LIPE with aircraft 777-200LR, with 3D clouds and ALS enabled --> 15 fps;
5) started at LIPE with aircraft Concorde, everything else disabled (ALS, 3D Clouds, etc...) only basic scenery and ambient active --> 3 fps.

don't know if it is reletad but my CPU (intel xeon x5450 quad core) doesn't support HT (HyperThreading)... I suppose my CPU can't do more than this... when fgfs is executed, cpu 1/4 core is always at 100%, gpu goes from 1% to 26%

In case 5, enabling ALS, 3D clouds and Particles makes no difference --> always 3-4 fps...

So you seem to be CPU limited - all aircraft with high-fidelity systems modeling which are computationally rather intensive slow you down progressively. I'm not sure where on the performance scale the intel xeon x5450 quad core is, but yeah, the likely reason is that it's not a gaming-grade piece of hardware which is what you need for the high end of FG.

What Concorde are You using ? Try this one - https://github.com/BAWV12/Concorde
With Advanced weather ON, AI ON, many clouds, complex scenery I have decent 15 fps. Try use parameters in the launcher, tab Settings :
Code: Select all
--prop:/sim/rendering/multithreading-mode=CullDrawThreadPerContext

My machine :
i5 K2550 quad core @3.4GHz, 8 GB 1333 MHz RAM, GPU nVidia 750 GTX 2GB.
Fly high, fly fast - fly Concorde !

I am running the program (2018.1.1) from the launcher. Rendering is default. Anti-Aliasing is off. I have this statment in additional command line arguments.
/sim/rendering/texture-compression=off
In View, Rendering options , I have everything disabled with the exception of Terrain Textures. Which I have set for Global alternative DDS format.
I have been flying the Cessna C172P. If I am over water, or areas with few graphics, my FPS can be as high as 30 to 40. When I am over land where there are comensurately more objects, it goes as low as 8. Which produces issues when landing. I have tried a few different airports, and the same general performance happens.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Burr

Get a decent graphics card or avoid the C-172p and Europe where the scenery is more demanding.

Burr,With what you have supplied above, just done a general search and it's performance is rated 3 out of 10 generally for "gaming" as it's intergrated and not dedicated. Just for the record I have a laptop (See the general specs' below my signature) and my laptop has a AMD R7-M260 with 2Gb onboard RAM dedicated card alongside the intergrated Intel HD 4400 and the system memory of 16Gb. I am using 2018.2.1 over land (Europe) I class 12 - 15 FPS as good and over water I can get 25 to 29 FPS. So as Thorsten suggests maybe think about at least a laptop that has a dedicated graphics card alongside the intergrated one, Because really and truly no notebook or laptop is "really" a gaming set up just a slightly upgraded version, or better still a desktop with a decent graphics card (minimum of 1Gb of dedicated graphics RAM on the card) otherwise you will struggle
