Total Failure w/ 2017.1.2 Win 10 Build 15063

I have been trying to get FlightGear 2017.1.2 to work on Windows 10 64 bit build 15063 (this is the pending Creators Edition update). Using ATI R9-380, Intel I7-6850K, Asus X99 Deluxe II. The install completes successfully. But I am unable to use the game. All attempts to use FG result in extremely lagged response to any mouse actions. I am not even trying to add new airplanes or scenery. But what is worse is that once FG is opened the desktop gets corrupted. Even closing FG does not correct the problem and I need to reboot to get the desktop back to normal operation.

Here is the hardware/software:
Windows 10 64 bit build 15063 (happened on build 15058)
32 GB RAM, 500 GB Plextor PCI M.2 SSD
FG 2017.1.2
ATI R9-380, Driver Packaging Version 16.40.2311.1002-161121a-309377E
OpenGL® Version 6.14.10.14008
"C:\Program Files\FlightGear 2017.1.2\bin\fgfs.exe" --launcher

From what I can garner, the Airplane screen has text that is not properly alligned: It has overlaps.

Now here is interesting twist. I have a VMware guest machine with Windows 8.1 64 bit. On that guest VM, FG installs and operates properly. But the guest has less CPU and memory so the performance isn't the best. But it does work.

I don't know if this could be a Windows error, an ATI error, or something in FG. I know it isn't good when a game hoses the OS to the point the OS needs to be rebooted. I have already reported this to the MS development team in teh event it turns out to be an OS fault.

Since I am new to FG, I can use any pointers or suggestions. I would really love to get this running natively on this hardware as I think the machine should be a decent performer.

Wait, is ATI your graphics card? Or CPU?

No one has used ATI afaik, and AMD cards are know to have funny behaviour (but should never corrupt a desktop)...

If you have an Intel CPU,. Switch back to the Intel HD graphics. It's slow but it works.
There are free alternatives to (almost) every program you encounter. You just have to find them.

Can you try performing a clean reinstall of the graphics card drivers?

  1. Get the latest drivers from the AMD Web site (513 MB download).
  2. Open the AMD support article detailing the uninstallation procedure.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet to prevent Windows 10 from downloading your graphics card drivers automatically.
  4. Follow the instructions I linked to in step 2 to uninstall the old driver. Reboot your computer when you are prompted to do so.
  5. Run the installation program you downloaded in step 1 to install the driver again.

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions. I have the problem resolved and FG is up and running.

1. The Intel I7-6850K and Asus X99 Deluxe II has no integrated graphics.
2. The ATI is the graphics card. I have the Radeon R9-380 for dual monitor graphics.

The solution was to completely uninstall the AMD software. I even deleted the AMD files from C:\User\<user name here>\AppData\Local\AMD folder. I then installed the latest driver package from the ATI site. That corrected all the trouble I was experiencing.

My guess is that in the process of upgrading to build 15063 there is a driver that is not totally compatible with the game. I can say that whatever was installed worked well for other games and OS apps. Doing a clean install put FG to rights.

Now time to learn how to fly a Cessna :)
