Cloud shadows

Postby gsagostinho » Mon Apr 13, 2015 12:48 pm

Hi all,

Quick question: is there some setting somewhere controlling the quality of cloud shadows? My shadows look a bit strange. Compare these two images below:

The first is from a post by Thorsten, the second is a screenshot on my system. It's a bit difficult to compare them because the first picture is from a very low altitude, but it seems to me his shadows are much smoother and less blob-like. Any ideas what this could be, or what I am getting is perfectly normal?

Thanks!
Gilberto

I'm getting the same as you. I tried adjusting what I thought might be the problem and it didn't correct it. So I guess we'll have to wait for someone in the know to help us.

They are more or less like that from high altitude I think. The noise function used isn't very sophisticated.

One difference between the shots is that you have very hard lighting conditions, under which the shadows appear very pronounced. At a different time of day and possibly different higher cloud layers, the contrast to the terrain is not quite as harsh.

Yes, thank you.
I was able to soften it up a bit with conditions and time of day. Also I noticed that the ground cover underneath the shadow plays a role in how sharp it is a.

One thing that may be somewhat of a bug, when I switch settings in the Advanced weather dialog enough or in the wrong order, or something, I lose the shadows altogether (nothing that would have shut it off). I had it happen the first time I tried to help recreate gsagostinho visuals, I couldn't get shadows at all. But I had my sim running for quite some time doing other things with metar and other prior to attempting to turn shadows on. After reboot they appeared. I couldn't even begin to recreate what might have caused it but I think it is only happening when putting major stress on the weather system.
