Telnet vs. generic protocol

Hello,
as far as I have understood, there are two ways how to communicate with FG - either using telnet or generic protocol.
As telnet seems simpler (to me at least), what are the benefits of using generic protocol over telnet?
If the only thing I need is data exchange (for now mainly getting data from FG, but later also puting data into FG), eg. velocity, altitude, position, etc., will using telnet be sufficient?
