saving a model to scenery windows 7

Postby musicstuff » Sun Jan 04, 2015 7:56 pm

Hi I have been through the wiki and you tube info on how to place a model with the ufo, and all works but when I hit D nothing happens. so I put the terminal in the background but there's no way to copy from it. the help vid in wiki for windows doesn't work. i'm pretty much lost in trying to save a model into my scenery.
could some one guide me to a tutorial or give me a boot to get me off
I am running windows 7 home and FG 3.2
thanks

If you've got the terminal in the background, you should be able to copy from it by right clicking in it and choosing Select. Select the text you want to copy in the terminal and right click it to copy it into the clipboard.

I figgered it out, I had to right click on the top bar of the console and do a little digging and a strange procedure but I found my way through the file had to be opened with word pad#$#&*&*%

Beginning of Big Long Tutorial
"Alternatively, if you press the E key while developing scenery with UFO, FlightGear will generate a xml file with the dump of your current work in an "ufo-model-export.xml" file under $FG_HOME. "

So once you are done adding scenery, press "e" and then close FlightGear.

Go to Windows Explorer.

Type this into the "URL bar" of Windows explorer at the top: C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME_ON_WINDOWS\AppData\Roaming\flightgear.org\Export

Open the .xml file there. And there is all the details of your scenery.

Now-- do you want to just see it yourself, or share it with others?

If you want to see it yourself just, open FGRun. Go to the last page, where above "Run" is Advanced. On the first page of the Advanced menu is a box labeled "Config".
Press the ... button.
And then navigate to ufo-model-export.
Done! You will now see your model.

If you want to share it: go to http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/submi ... import.php and then copy and paste the line in ufo-model-export where it says stg (don't include the tags) into the box and submit. If it is accepted, we can all see you work!

Great tip and catch. Do you know if later exports overwrite, append or add new export files to the Export folder?
I didn't know you could pick up the models with this method, ingenious!

They add to it as far as I know. So you can add models at 2 airports and see them all.

You can't find it because the folder is hidden. Check "show hidden files" box in "folder options".
On the launcher follow lego instructions. I used the ufo today to place some objects, followed the wiki tutorial and was succesful.
In the launcher my path looks like this:
Code: Select all
c:\documents and settings/bla..bla.../Application Data/flightgear.org/ufo-model-export.xml

I'm using win xp, don't know if is the same on win 7.

Cache data is one thing but I've never been very happy with where this type of data was chosen to be stored.
Something like this that a user/developer creates and needs access to imo shouldn't be originally stored to a "hidden" system folder. At the very least it would be nice to add a choice of locations like is available for pictures and terragear (if that type of change would be likely to be accepted, I think I could do that).

Here's an issue I have found...

Been working on buildings for London Stansted. Have all the piers, terminal, tower and hangars in place, using shared jetways etc...

I loaded everything using the UFO, and added that as described above. I also then took the relevant lines of information, and added them to the corresponding .SVG file, so I had it on both.

For a couple of days it all worked perfectly, then it started to get slower loading, until I got error reports.

When I load FG at Stansted, I get the gates and everything "shared", however nothing in my personal folder.

Any ideas? Should I move the models and update the XML/.SVG files into the /airports/buildings/ folder for instance?

Can you tell us any changes you made just before it happened, the error reports, and what your command line is?
