Accidents and Incidents / Amazing Landings & Take Offs

Postby JcHnd » Sun Dec 27, 2009 12:21 am

Hi!
This is a topic where you guys can post any accident or incident whether in video links, images or text from any news website... doesnt matter if they are old... first of all i have a video, this one surprised me... really good, its about an IL-18 from DHL that aborted a take-off and skidded off the runway, the weird thing is, that a lot of people was spotting the take-off (maybe because the plane its really old) and when the plane had the incident they didn't surprised or anything.... well i better give you the video... here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ogb69OBceRI

keep posting interesting videos or images of aircraft accidents and incidents please

Re: Accidents and Incidents

Postby Liam » Sun Dec 27, 2009 12:40 am

Well I used to watch a few ACI programmes, I posted about it a while ago but there was a rather odd crash which happened in Greece a few years ago.

Helios flight 522:
Helios was a small airline based in Cyprus. Helios Airlines went bankrupt in 2005, After losing one of its small Fleet of 3 737's to a tragic air disaster.

One of the most mysterious flight accidents in aviation history, One of the 3 Helios 737's was en route from Cyprus to Prague via Athens when it failed to communicate with ATC for more than 2 hours, which was much longer than its origional flightplan. The aircraft circled over Athens and the Greek air force flew alongside it to try to establish communications with them and to their astonishment- there was no sign of life whatsoever including in the cockpit where the pilots appeared to be asleep as they did not even turn their head to the military aircrafts flying closely- Likewise in the cabin of the 737. Amazingly, they noticed a male figure walk into the cockpit in steward clothing and he did not seem too bothered by the military being so close, and did not make an attempt to contact through radio. One military pilot put his hand up clearly at the steward, but he did not respond for a while untill he did it back. The plane remained circling a small hill range outside Athens and ran out of fuel, slowly descending into the valleyside killing everyone on board (although some conspiracies assume they were already dead).

The incident was traced by observing wreckage of the cockpit equipment, when they discovered that the ground crew had adjusted the cabin oxygen supply during maintainence as they checked a replacement cabin door for its airtight structure (as an incident previously caused the replacement of a door). The warning alarms were sounded multiple times in the cockpit and help was given via ATC, but the crew failed to locate the problem as standard procedure rarely checks the use of the cabin oxygen supply, as 99.9% of the time it is set to "Auto" and nothing else. As the gas masks dropped in the cabin, the oxygen is designed to supply passengers for a few minutes while the pilots descend to a safe breathing altitude. But as there was no sign of cabin pressure loss, the pilots never descended untill all inside had passed out (except one male steward, who remained breathing off portable oxygen located in various locations around the aircraft, but he was likely highly nauseated and hardly concious enough to act efficiently). The loss of the small Cypriot airline sparked a wave of sadness throughout the Mediterranean island.

yeah... i watched the episode too, really weird... gives a lot to think about... this one makes you think about stuff and its weird also:

China Airlines Flight 120

On August 20, 2007, a China Airlines Boeing 737-800 (B-18616) landed as usual, taxied to the gate area, people started to leave the airplane and the plane exploded in fire, suddenly, just like that!

At a news conference on August 24, investigators revealed that a bolt, which had come loose from the slat track, had punctured the right wing fuel tank, creating a hole 2–3 centimetres in diameter, wich made the engine to caught fire.

This was just stupid....

TAN-SAHSA flight 414

This one was in my country, on October 21st 1989, 10/21 its a national holiday....
The plane involved, a Boeing 727-200 (N88705) [Ex- Continental Airlines], at MHTG, Toncontin International Airport....

Image

In the 1980's at MHTG airplanes usually made a 3 step landing to avoid mountains arround the airport, but that day the pilots decided to not follow the steps from the airport tower and did it straight, having confidence in their knowledge of landings at the airport, but something went wrong and the plane went stall and crashed at a mountain... simply stupid

Image

Image

Image

and the thing is... that the pilots survived with almost any injury, but they killed 123 persons of 130 in the flight.... also the accident took TAN-SAHSA to bankrupty in the 90's..... sad.... and stupid

This was the last livery in the 727, the SAHSA "House" livery... You like it?
Image

This is an angle that shows the MHTG landings in the 1980's

Yep, I have heard every one of these before. Yet, is it alright if I post some scary, live youtube videos of some accidents?

yes that's the point of the topic!

btw some people asked me about the photo above... and no... that's not the runway of the airport... that's a business near the runway at MHTG, and the sand part its the parking lot of the business
but that doenst happen anymore the mountains has been cutted off to make space to the planes to land and the runway its 300m longer for helping the mighty American Airlines 757 and C-17 to take off and land...

Here's a little scary video, that shows how the 300m have helped to avoid another TACA 390 (May 2008)... i mean another runway overrun... as you can see in the video shows works of the mountains cutting... and yes... the plane almost hit them  that is a pretty bad pilot people! listen to the cameraman reaction!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJoXMcehrYo

keeping an update from this plane.... look at this picture comments.... OMG!!!

that AA in MHGT video its sooo old... arround 1999 and 2000.... as you can see the mountains are there and the runway looks really small... almost anything showed there its still arround... not the streets, the mountains and the runway, the terminal its the old one too the new one was constructed between 2005-2006

American Airlines Flight 331: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Airlines_Flight_331

Found out about this on their Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/aa). Although there were no deaths on board the 738, there were 87 injuries, four of which were serious. The plane itself? Well... look at this photo:

Image

Yeah, looks like it can be repaired, with those broken wings and such?
