I am not sure the age of the aircraft is the problem, but rather the safety related air show rules and arrangements. Had there been an altitude limit for acrobatic maneuvers, say 300 ft AGL, this would probably not have happened.

Of course there might have been engine performance problems, but sadly it is not the first time someone finds out the hard way that no matter how perfect the loop is you pretty much always come out at a lower altitude. The energy you loose due to extra drag while performing the maneuver will manifest itself as coming out at a lower altitude and/or airspeed, usually both.

This video shows rather well that he was probably also stalling through probably the last third of the loop. In essence it was too late to do anything but trying to maneuver away from people if at all possible (which I guess is also the reason he did not eject):

if that was indeed the case, i find some gallantry in that, reminds me of United Airlines Flight 232,

RIP. This is a pretty bad year for air shows, what with all the previous crashese and all.. that it came down directly on the highway is even more tragic

Is there actually a limit? Even so 300agl seems a bit low even for that? I would think 800, and for loops, start above 2500.

The wreckage will be moved today. The police have said there are definitely 11 dead, but say that could rise to 20.

Here is a rather well performed emergency landing by a Lockheed P-2V fire bomber at the Minden–Tahoe Airport (KMEV), Nevada, USA.

Now imagine this: Strong crosswind from right and your left main landing gear refuses to extend.

Indeed bravo BUT: if I had 3 of 4 main landing gears, I'd go for a much easier touchdown! In my humble opinion it was a bit on the hard side...

You can recreate that in FlightGear! I almost did just that a couple of years ago. I failed both body and wing gear instead of just the wing though, hence the inevitable tumbling over. At least I "predicted" the right side

It almost looked like they were trying to shake the gear loose. Plus the steep slow angle made for a very short roll-out.

But that bounce was a sight to see, sturdy wings and fuselage.

This is a really, really scary parachute jump. After tandem jumpers had left the aircraft it dived close enough that the wing ripped off the drogue chute. As the drogue chute was ripped off the main chute could not be deployed so the spare chute had to be used instead.

Unaware pilot (with jumpers hidden above the windshield line of sight), freak accident or downright murder attempt? Who knows.
