Whoa, that looks like a separation of maybe 5 feet or less (GoPros & cameras have tendency to look further than they are?). If I were them I would be having some very angry words with the pilots . I don't think it was intentional but what it was just wreckless to not check where the jumpers are and giving some separation before diving.

I thought you meant that figuratively till I read the link... Yikes! It was literally torn to pieces within a minute after departure. :? :(

From the accident report:*
The cause of the accident was that the plane during departure came into the wind conditions that exceeded the aircraft's design criteria. Thus there was a break in the horizontal stabilizer/elevator which meant that the plane could no longer be controlled.

This accident is also a stark reminder that it is not always that easy to make the right decision and delay or cancel a flight even though you might risk it all, as you may be under (real or perceived) pressure from the company or your passengers (of which neither may understand and appreciate the risks involved). :(

The winds they got prior to taxi was beyond the ground operating limits in the gusts, but they still took the decision to start taxing and as the winds got down a bit they took off (though the wind still was outside the company's operational limits). That being said, during the last years before the accident and the closing of the airport some 15% of the flights was cancelled and about 96% of them due to wind conditions. However, no departures was cancelled... (p. 34-35) Perhaps needless to say, there had been prior incidents, and pilots did in no way like the airport in adverse wind conditions.

I noted that the accident commission made no recommendation to close the airport.

* In Norwegian, the original language of the official accident report (pdf, 2.5 MB): "Årsaken til havariet var at flyet under utflygingen kom inn i vindforhold som oversteg flyets konstruksjonskriteria. Derved oppsto det brudd i haleflate/høyderor som medførte at flyet ikke lenger kunne kontrolleres."

General Dynamics F-16 Falcon happily munching trees after a pilot crossed a ridge line more than a few feet too low:  :?

Damage on all leading edges and engine inlet, though the engine itself seem to have taken it very little damage.

Something a lot more crazy. That is a rather late parachute opening.

An uncontained engine failure causes loss of engine (as in dropped) and 1/4 of the wing, and an in-flight fire for a PanAm flight. While the aircraft successfully do an emergency landing and passengers safely leave the aircraft, their problems are not quite over yet.

I felt I needed to add that to indicate that the engine did not just stop but actally separated from the aircraft. ;)

It is a bit amazing that nobody on the ground got severely injured or killed, considering the damages caused by the falling parts. :)

143 passengers, all but 8 took that third flight, "a courageous tribute to man's confidence in the machines he builds". Love the old style news reporting.

True. Today it would have sounded radically different. :(

The world is getting more vulnerable

I used to consider this merely a theoretical possibility, but still would prefer old fashioned standby instruments.

This flight deck appears to have lost all displays right after takeoff and had only a wet compass to fly on, not even an altimeter. Scary stuff! :?

It would be interesting to know what caused it, but the most comprehensive source I can find seem to be The Aviation Herald.

Here is the other way around: Power outage and partially failing backup at Miami ATC. In essence no radar, no monitors, and only a few radios. Much, much more scary. :?

Side note: Most things we take for granted in the industrialized world would simply not be there after a three day power outage: Heat/AC, water, food, petrol, phones, Internet etc...
