747 with 5 (!!) engines

The purpose of this was to transport an engine when another 747 was off-base with a failed engine.

Sorry for the bad pun, but transporting them like that must be quite a drag. :P ;)
Low-level flying — It's all fun and games till someone looses an engine. (Paraphrased from a YouTube video)

Anyone here know the design hours needed, the stress calcs required for such a thing....

It'd be quicker to send the engine by rickshaw.

If you watch 'top gear' you'll see a 747 on their runway used for 'a star in a reasonably priced car'. It's RR's flying test bed and can be regularly seen with 5 engines on it.

Simon

This should answer your question.:-

http://www.vc10.net/Technical/oddities.html#EnginePod,

Also this from the Super VC10 Navigation and Performance Manual http://www.vc10.net/Technical/1-5-6.html

And here is another VC10 with 5 engines

The calculations for loading, drag, performance etc. are the normal ones for carrying external (usually military) stores.

I believe the 747 was designed with ferrying an engine in mind. So this was not a new design designed specifically for this flight.
