Late go round danger!

Postby sim » Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:02 am

Some insane footage has emerged of an Aeromexico Connect Embraer 145 coming in for landing and missing the runway by a long shot. In the video you can see the plane making several turns on approach, including on short final. The video is shot by a passenger, so you know it’s a crazy landing when the passengers can see the runway next to them during a go around.
Dreadful approach no way lined up with the runway. Initiating go round seems dangerously late.
You’d think the pilots would have known a bit earlier the approach wasn’t going to work, though perhaps there’s more to the story. Fortunately they did initiate a go around (eventually), and landed safely.

Many pilots have a set of criteria the use to aid quick decision-making. One often used for landing vs. go around is stable vertical airspeed and stable course, a.k.a. stable approach.

That said they could possibly have encountered some unexpected turbulance or windshear, but they seemed to be awfully far from the runway even for that.

I do wonder why the pilot for some reason choose to align with runway heading before the climb though.
