Wow! Look at the size of those spoilerons/spoilers! I guess they need them for yaw control.

Why on Earth would anyone want to stand right under such a low approach. Maybe it's just me, by my life is to dear, minding the usual distribution of aircraft accidents (first landings, then take off and then the other phases of flight).

Also something else came to mind. For those looking for sounds to use to their aircraft, using sound from a Navy video should be completely legit, as it is produced by the U.S. government. :D

I used to lay at the very edge of the the threshold for runway 26L at CYVR (Was just 26 then) to snap photos of landing aircraft. Often they would pass mere feet above me. Not sure if I could do it today... Maybe.

Must have made for spectacular images (specially if using wide angle optics). But at the same time it makes me shiver. :?

To get to that spot today you probably would have to wear ghillie, but at the other hand if you get caught wearing ghillie at an airport...

Posted already by KL-666, but I post it here as well.

Children of the Magenta, a 25 minutes presentation about automation dependency and situational awareness, by Captain Warren Vanderburgh of the American Airlines Flight Academy, filmed in 1997.

If you fly with the autopilot, only the autopilot and always the autopilot, this is for you:

Here are two long, but very comprehensive instructional movies about instrument flying from the early sixties by US Air Force.

The first one (30 min) is about the basics, cross-checking, heading and altitude corrections, more cross-checking, regular manoeuvres and more cross-checking.

The second one (15 min) is about instrument take offs, cross-checking, recovery from unusual attitude and, as you probably have guessed by know, more cross-checking.

Cross-checking is comparing the instruments against each other to get a complete picture of what is happening and for some redundancy, while taking into account instrument errors like lag, procession, reversal etc. They are essential for safe navigation, and I guess if you ignore them and fly as you see fit (seems particularly on take off climbs while accelerating), you will "experience" a CFIT.

I have for some time wondered what that cross-checking thing was and of course while looking for something completely else (airborne celestial navigation) stumbled upon these.

Apparently water bombers can be used for more than forest fires:

What do you do when there's a fire not far from a house in the neighbourhood?

Low Level Air Navigation, Instruction film, US Navy, 1960, featuring the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk

Low Level Air Navigation (23 min), Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI)

Contents: Low level navigation problems, finding suitable checkpoints, map plotting (and cutting!) and a fly-through of the planned mission with adjustments as necessary etc.

Maybe a bit crude planning and plotting by today's standard, but good enough for use. For those who feel for trying this but have no map, have a look at the FG Wiki article Getting aeronautical charts.
