The only flight of the Hughes H-4 Hercules a.k.a. the Spruce Goose. Film shot during a taxi test November 2, 1947.

While it might look a bit large it is actually huge. In fact it has the widest wing span to this day.

Aah,the C-130. The only transport currently in use by the Swedish Air Force. They used to train not far from where I grew up. It was not uncommon that one or two worried (often elderly) citizens would call in a crashed aircraft. The terrain can mute their sound quite effectively after the dived over a ridge or a hill.

Also I fondly remember a former co-workers anecdote from his conscript military service in a mountain ranger unit when they was told to prepare for a helicopter resupply at given coordinates. The guy that was standing ready at end of the freshly made helipad in a snowy valley was preparing himself to guide in the heli got more than a little shaky when instead of a heli a Hercules comes roaring over the ridge he is facing, making its drop with the pallet stopping only a few meters away from him. :? 8) The account probably should be taken with more than a grain of salt, though at least they hit the helipad.

Seeing that the Northrop F-20 Tigershark has gotten some more attention recently I got curious and found this promotional video:

Bumping this topic with a North American P-51B Mustang pilot familiarisation film (due to making more or less the same but in parts being mentioned by hvengel over at P-51D Mustang Weapons Systems)

Anyone else saw the D version rolling by?

Changing an airfoil's Reynolds number by acoustic excitation. An interesting phenomenon to say the lest. I was completely stunned when I first heard of this maybe half a year ago.

I have seen a longer talk in English, recorded in Sweden by a TV channel with many great talks and lectures, by someone from an American university about this phenomenon but unfortunately I have not found it again. IIRC, they used acoustic transducers evenly spaced along the upper side of the leading edge and at the top of the chord. Again IIRC, they previously used those for pressure measurements.

Amazing! 8)

When it gets into FlightGear it will probably do smuggling runs to Colombia á la Jack Dalton's "Fly-by-night Air Freight — The official airline for slugs, scum bags and all manners of vermin". I did not understand his choice of aircraft till know. That thing can outmanoeuvre a fighter.

BTW saw this YouTube comment there:

Flying the Vought F4U Corsair (21 min).

Russian Sukhoi Su-27KUB doing takeoffs and landings on the Kuznetsov. Note the equipment on the takeoff positions (6 min).

Engine runs with a Sukhoi Su-27 having English(!) annunciators, decals and instruments (10 min).
