[SOLVED] Status of Live FGCom Status Page

Postby mjanicki » Fri Mar 20, 2015 12:59 am

Over the last two days I've noticed that I'm unable to connect to the web site: http://fgcom.flightgear.org/ where I would nornally be able to get reall-time updates as to which FGCom clients were connected and on what frequencies. This lack of status page seems to coincide with problematic connections to the voice servers from various FlightGear-related clients.

Anyone else seeing these difficulties or have a potential explanation? Thanks.

FWIW: i'm not able to reach that machine, either... not with any networking tools... traceroute only gets to ~13 hops and then stops returning any results... that's using udp and icmp as probes... the ip for that host, 95.85.54.30, seems to belong to Digital Ocean in the Netherlands... i'm guessing that either DO or that machine are having problems...

"Why not?" said Gurder.

Thanks for the confirmation, wkitty. It's unfortunate since FGCom voice services rely on that server. Oh well.

Why is the fgcom server still not up ? Usually its back in a few days...
Is it possible to create one or more backup servers?
Did someone ever tried it ?, The two or more servers at that time would have to communicate. But I think thats already covered in asterisk ?

I had a look at installing asterisk on ubuntu, but I can't get the frequency perl script ?
If I knew the layout, it would be easy in a shellscript too...

EDIT : gen_phonebook.pl already downloaded from gitorious.

Well, After thinking again I don't think it is a good idea.
I can get the server running while I am flying, but when I stop, I just can't keep the fgcom server running.
It should be a server on an external/online server.

But I still wonder why the fgcomserver is not up now...

Still not working, is there a way to have more official info from FGCom admin/dev ?

Hmm, shame. I have sent an email to Clément on the side a few days ago, who probably got several more. But I see nothing else reasonable to do until somebody starts thinking of setting up a new backup server.

Yeah it's a bit sad to have seen the fgcom server vanishing without prior notice. Switching to mumble is just an awful regression in terms of realism. Maybe a call for a new fgcom server hosting should be discussed on the mailing list.

Dirk (D-Leon) hosted the fgcom01.f.o server prior to fgcom.f.o, maybe he'd agree to rebirth it :)

i've just posted a request in #flightgear on irc.flightgear.org... maybe one of the 50+ people in there has the boots to provide the necessary kick to wake the server up...

i was just told that the person who was volunteering the fgcom server has left the project... apparently they took their server with them... not sure what the official move is as i've not seen anything mentioned in the developer's list archives but i only went back to the first of the year when i started reading them...

Ouch. Hopefully a rumor, though at the other hand the last wiki edit that person did was blanking his user page... :(

I guess the lesson learned is having as few single points of failure (SPoF) as possible. :|

exactly, johan... especially when it comes to having servers used for system wide interaction like comms servers used for multiplayer... one would think that there would be a group of centralized servers working together for this particular task... i don't know how many users there are at any one time on a comms server for fgfs but yeah, something robust and redundant would seem to be necessary...

Any idea what to do about this then?
I am too new in this crowd to have known the previous servers and volunteers. Could we fall back on them? Should we add a "server hosting wanted" announcement in this month's newsletter?

From the -devel mailing list (see the thread "New fgcom server needed"):
Another contributor (Kévin Seroux) has a dedicated server in Paris and has volunteered to host another FGCom server - he is currently trying to set it up.
