FGCom with Open Radar on Mac

Postby jdsmith » Sun Jul 20, 2014 6:51 am

Hi all.
I have been using OpenRadar for a while on my Mac (10.7.5) and have not been able to use FGCom. I checked the wiki and it looks like I need to run it in terminal but I can not figure out how. Sorry if this might be super easy, I just have not been able to find a source that can tell me.

Thanks in advanced

FGCom has short range and you need to set a specific frequency in Comm1. And then it is sometimes hard to find someone on FGCom and thus, it looks as if it doesn't work. Havy you tried the echo test in the Multiplayer/FGCom?

I can't even figure out how to start fgcom. I know you're supposed to run it in terminal for a mac, but I don't know what to type in. I've tried just openning terminal and typing in this:
fgcom -Sdelta384.server4you.de -p16662 -i1 -o1 -s192.168.178.23
but it just says:
-bash: fgcom: command not found

What about reading the documentation: http://wiki.flightgear.org/FGCom_3.0
If you have any problem with this documentation, please tell us exactly which part is a problem for you.

I can now get it to run in terminal but it is not working. Here is what I do:
I type this in:
Code: Select all
unknownc8bcc8cadbbe:~ admin$ cd /Application/FlightGear.app/Contents/MacOS
unknownc8bcc8cadbbe:MacOS admin$ chmod +x fgcom
unknownc8bcc8cadbbe:MacOS admin$ ./fgcom -Sfgcom.flightgear.org -p16661

then this happens:
Code: Select all
fgcom - a communication radio based on VoIP with IAX/Asterisk
Original (c) 2007-2011 by H. Wirtz <wirtz@dfn.de>
OSX and Windows ports 2012-2013 by Yves Sablonier and Geoff R. McLane, resp.
Version 3.0.0 compiled Feb 15 2014, at 16:11:09
Using iaxclient library Version SVN 261

Successfully parsed commandline options
Loaded file [../Resources/special_frequencies.txt].
Reading airports [../Resources/positions.txt]
loaded 47171 entries
Initializing IAX client as guest:xxxxxxxxxxx@fgcom.flightgear.org

I then open OpenRadar with these settings:
    FGCom mode: External
    Client host: localhost
    ports: 16661,16662
I then select the airport I'd like and press start. In OpenRadar, I then switch COMM0 and COMM1 to 910.00 and press the PTT button, and speak. The problem is that I do not hear anything.
Here is the "code" that shows up in terminal after I open OpenRadar
Code: Select all
Selected frequency: 910
Originating an audio only call
Special frequency: 910
Call 0 accepted
Echo Box - For testing FGCOM
Call 0 answered

It seems you are making hard work for yourself. Try this.

Use the Mac launcher and click on the little triangle which is to the left of 'Advanced Features'.
Then select 'Network' and fill in the details it asks for.

That should work.

But that only works with the FlightGear Launcher... or does the built in FGCom in the OpenRadar Launcher work now?

I think you already got it working... The comms on OpenRadar are simplex, either listen or talk, not both. So, you could start FG on the airport you start OpenRadar on and see if you (the pilot) receives the transmissions from you (the controller). Also looking at http://fgcom.flightgear.org/ helps to check it you're oke.

I can now here the echo on channel 910.00. But I now have 2 more problems.
Problem A: I can only change between these 3 channels: 123.45, 122.75, and 910.00 (I've tried right clicking on the frequency to type in my own like the wiki tells me to, but it won't let me)
Problem B: When I switch to another one of these channels (e.g. when I switch to 123.45) and then switch back to 910.00, the echo test no longer works. The strange thing is that the terminal window still shows:
Code: Select all
Echo Box - For testing FGCOM
Call 0 answered
[LISTEN] mute mic, unmute speaker
[SPEAK] unmute mic, mute speaker

Thanks to everybody that has replied. I really appreciate the support

Hi jdsmith
1. Open the TERMINAL Window from the Applications Folder-Utilities Folder-Launch the Terminal Window
2. Once you Launch you will see a the Display for example
"Last login: Sat Aug 9 20:03:30 on console
User-MacBook:~ user$" (continue typing)/ Applications/FlightGear.app/Contents/MacOS/fgcom-Sdelta384.server4you.de-i0.93-o0.92-p16661(and hit the Enter button)
3. (You can see this display)"fgcom - a communication radio based on VoIP with IAX/Asterisk
Original (c) 2007-2011 by H. Wirtz <wirtz@dfn.de>
OSX and Windows ports 2012 by Yves Sablonier and Geoff R. McLane, respectively.
Version 2.8.0 build 261 date Jan 28 2013, at 23:53:53
Using iaxclient library Version SVN 261

Successfully parsed commandline options.
Loaded file [/Applications/FlightGear.app/Contents/Resources/fgcom-data/special_frequencies.txt].
Reading airports [/Applications/FlightGear.app/Contents/Resources/fgcom-data/positions.txt]... loaded 36741 entries.
Initializing IAX client as guest:xxxxxxxxxxx@delta384.server4you.de"
4. Now before Launching FlightGear please confirm (Not on Full Screen Mode- you can uncheck the Full screen mode in Rende in the Flight Gear Launcher with Window Size 800x600) you have both FG Window and Terminal Window side by side. And please ensure that you have CHECKED the Enable FGCOM in Multi Player mode and you TYPE in the FGCOM Server box delta384.server4you.de
5. Reverify you are ONLINE connected to the internet
5. Start Flight
Then you will see the following text appearing in the Terminal Window
"Selected frequency: 120.500
Hanging up call 0"
Start the aircraft and open the Radio Settings from Equipment and please enter the frequency 910 in Com1 and swap to the left
then you will see the display in the Terminal window like this
"Selected frequency: 910.000
Special freq : 910.000
Special freq : 910.000
[SPEAK] unmute mic
Special freq : 910.000
Special freq : 910.000
[LISTEN] mute mic"
Now press the space bar and Speak in a delay of 2 or 3 seconds you should hear the echo sound minimally which means you are connected with Multiplayer FGCOM
(Also in the File Section on the Top left hand corner you will see the Sound Configuration Please Verify the levels of the Sound also confirm you have checked the box AI/MP)
Try it and let us know how things have worked out for you.

Cheers

Hi Once again
I retried experimenting myself with FGCOM and i can successfully launch FGCOM working with echo test successful.
but instead of delta384 server i was trying with fgcom.flightgear.org Server and the results in the terminal is for your kind perusal.

Hi Vel Air
Sorry I haven't responded, I have been out of town for a while. I appreciate all the help you've given me for FGCom when used in conjunction with FGFS. My one question is: does this work on Open Radar. It strikes me as though it does work except when under the special conditions that I mentioned above which were:
Problem A: I can only change between these 3 channels: 123.45, 122.75, and 910.00 (I've tried right clicking on the frequency to type in my own like the wiki tells me to, but it won't let me)

Hi VelAir,

can you say me what code exactly did you put in the terminal? Cause I also tied to run OR and FgCom but i wasn't able to run it. I'm also on Mac.
That would be really nice.

Greetings
Niki
