Help me set up fgcom!  Topic is solved

FGCom is a realtime voice communication system specially designed for FlightGear.

Help me set up fgcom!

Postby User15443 » Thu Jan 09, 2014 4:40 pm

Hey guys.
Just got a problem with fgcom.
I am using an older fgcom that is no longer maintained. This is the one with the GUI as I find it easier to use. It works with Openradar but not with flightgear 2.12.1
If it makes a difference I am running 64 Bit Windows.
Thanks in advance

Did you try to install new?
See https://code.google.com/p/fgcomgui/ and follow the WINDOWS route.
Pls tell us where it does not work! To my knowledge it still should be working.

Otherwise see also Gijs viewtopic.php?f=32&t=21581#p197489

Nope not working. This is what I get after pushing start
Code: Select all
$ fgcom.exe -Sdelta384.server4you.de -i0.75 -o0.75 -p16661
fgcom.exe - a communication radio based on VoIP with IAX/Asterisk
(c)2007 by H. Wirtz <wirtz@dfn.de>
Version 1.2.2 build 226M (with FGComGui patch)
Using iaxclient library Version SVN UNKNOWN

Successfully parsed commandline options.
Reading list of airports...done.
Initializing IAX client as guest:xxxxxxxxxxx@delta384.server4you.de

Any ideas?

Since yesterday that server delta384.server4you.de is canceld --
it now is "fgcom01.flightgear.org".

I am right now changing the manuals accordingly.
Please advise you customers accordingly - I use a textline:

New FGCOM-Server is: fgcom01.flightgear.org (delta384.server4you.de is deaktivated!)

Coppied into the MPchat line in OpenRadar
hope that's it !
have fun

Will do that, thanks. Right now doing a lot more flying because of Openradar giving me black screen, but that's another issue.

That looks ok to me (allthough you seem to have another version client than me.)

But I do not see anny reaction to from FGFS and/or OpenRadar.
Can you continue:
- start FGCOM - as you did (in normal mode)
- start FGFS and/or OpenRADAR(external FGCOM)
- make sure you have the port -p16661 set there too
- select the frequencies wanted in FGFS and/or OR
and show me the output

If you cannot see the switch in frequ I would assume it is not the FGCom but your connection to FGFS and/or OpenRadar

Mr. Ross
Wouldn't you agree that, when you place a "call for Help" in an public forum, and somebody tries to help you, that as well the public as also the helper can expect a final statement of what the problem was? That should also help people that believe they have a similar problem as you had.

Your final statement to this in a private mail to me
Right I see now. Your first email had a bad server name!
Never mind. I have it now. Next time...

I see such behavior as not very helpful to the community - and definitely as a mud-slinging against somebody trying to help you:
  • I do not see anywhere in this thread a wrong server address given by me
  • the trace you posted after my note to you shows the correct server-address, as given to you
  • and still you claim I made an error?
  • and do not even care to close the "call for help" in public?
Do you really think that helps to motivate people to spend a lot of time to help other people?
At least I am very de-motivated to ever try to help you in future

I don't understand what you are saying...
What are you talking about error's?! Could you try to explain a bit more?
Also when I sent that log, it was with FG open.

Hi ROSS SORRY
that was my mistake: Some other support-case did run under Subj. "FGCOM" - allthough it was about MUMBLE.
I mixed them up both - Sorry again.

What is your status?
Can you send a trace when you start FGCOM standalone and then FGFS (and/or OpenRadar) and switch frequencies?
I would like to see that response that shows the interaction FGFS and FGCom.

Hi Ross,
sorry if I chime in - I had similar troubles setting up FGCom as well, but managed to do it in the end.

The key issue is that the radio frequencies indicated in the OpenRadar airport data are sometimes different from the ones used by FGCom (and listed in the phonebook.txt file). If you choose an old OpenRadar frequency that was reassigned to another distant aerodrome, FGCom will think the airport is not in range and will not forward your voice to the server.

This is the procedure I followed:
  1. I downloaded the latest FGCom development release and uncompressed it.
  2. First, I ran a test to check for possible connectivity/audio issues. I edited the test_fgcom.bat file to read as follows:
    Code: Select all
    @echo off
    CD bin
    CALL fgcom.exe -f910 -Sfgcom01.flightgear.org -p16661 -slocalhost -i1 -s1

Then I launched it and checked that the server actually answered my test call:
    Code: Select all
fgcom.exe - a communication radio based on VoIP with IAX/Asterisk
    Original (c) 2007-2011 by H. Wirtz <wirtz@dfn.de>
OSX and Windows ports 2012-2013 by Yves Sablonier and Geoff R. McLane, resp.
    Version 2.99.0 compiled Jan  9 2014, at 11:21:58
Using iaxclient library Version SVN 261

    Successfully parsed commandline options
    Loaded file [../share/flightgear/special_frequencies.txt].
    Reading airports [../share/flightgear/positions.txt]
    loaded 47171 entries
    Initializing IAX client as guest:xxxxxxxxxxx@fgcom01.flightgear.org
    Originating an audio only call
    Call 0 accepted
Echo Box - For testing FGCOM
    Call 0 answered

I then spoke in my microphone and heard my voice back. If the test does not work, make sure your firewall allows the FGCom traffic and that your microphone and headset/speakers are correctly connected and not muted.
  3. I then edited run_fgcom.bat as follows:
    Code: Select all
    @echo off
    CD bin
    CALL fgcom.exe -Sfgcom01.flightgear.org -p16661 -slocalhost -i1 -s1

(You may want to lower the input and output levels, that is, the -i and -s options). Running the file produced the following output:
    Code: Select all
fgcom.exe - a communication radio based on VoIP with IAX/Asterisk
    Original (c) 2007-2011 by H. Wirtz <wirtz@dfn.de>
OSX and Windows ports 2012-2013 by Yves Sablonier and Geoff R. McLane, resp.

    Reading airports [../share/flightgear/positions.txt]
    loaded 47171 entries
    Initializing IAX client as guest:xxxxxxxxxxx@fgcom01.flightgear.org
  4. I configured OpenRadar to connect to this instance of FGCom: in the Settings tab, FGComMode was set to External, Client to localhost and FGCom Ports to 16661.
  5. After starting the client, the FGCom console output changed to reflect that I was listening on the LIPX Tower frequency:
    Code: Select all
fgcom.exe - a communication radio based on VoIP with IAX/Asterisk
    Original (c) 2007-2011 by H. Wirtz <wirtz@dfn.de>

    Reading airports [../share/flightgear/positions.txt]
    loaded 47171 entries
    Initializing IAX client as guest:xxxxxxxxxxx@fgcom01.flightgear.org
    Selected frequency: 118.65
Airport VILLAFRANCA (LIPX TWR at 118.65 MHz) is in range (0 km)
    Originating an audio only call
    Hanging up call 0
FGCom will restart now with callsign Manual
Airport VILLAFRANCA (LIPX TWR at 118.65 MHz) is in range (0 km)
    Originating an audio only call
    Call 0 accepted
    LIPX VILLAFRANCA 118.650 TWR
    Call 0 answered

Make sure that the correct airport is displayed - if not, open the positions.txt file included in the FGCom package, search for your airport and take note of the frequency, then, in OpenRadar, right click on the frequency box and input the correct value. For extra safety, check you are indeed able to listen and speak with someone near you in FlightGear.
If this does not work, please copy the output of the console that appears when running run_fgcom.bat and paste it here, so that jomo or me can have a look at it.
