I can see from your 'map' command line

--atlas="C:\Program Files\FlightGear\data\Atlas"

...where Atlas thinks it lives, but look at those error messages:

Could not read palette from file ""C:\Program Files\FlightGear\data"/AtlasPalette".

Its not looking in ...Atlas, where both the Fonts folder and the pallettes files live.
Explains both errors, but just at the moment, not sure where it gets defined where Atlas's home is.
I'll have to do some poking, thought maybe this might give you a clue.
What was your command line for running Atlas? Try setting that --atlas option you used for Map when running Atlas too.

Ken

Oh, hrm, sorry, you're still working on 'Map', aren't you. Then still, check that --atlas clause.
If you still can't get it to work, add the options '--test --verbose' Will tell you exactly what it's doing and finding.
I also see all your images got writ to 'C:\Program', so there may still be space or " issues in your command line.

This is how I managed to get Atlas to work: I realise it may not work for you, but I hope this might help....

1. Create new file on C drive: Temp 1
2. Copy Fonts Folder and Atlas Palette from your main Atlas installation file and put them in this new file
3. Create a new folder under Program Files called Atlas
4. Put the following files in this folder (copied from your original Atlas installation):
• Fonts Folder
• Atlas
• Glut32.dll
• Map
• Map PS

Run this command: cd C:\Program Files\Atlas

Then run this command: map --size=512 --glutfonts --headless --fg-root="C:\Program Files\FlightGear" --atlas="C\Flightgear\data\Atlas" --fg-scenery="C\Program Files\Flightgear\Scenery" --palette="C:\temp1\AtlasPalette"

I know it is a bit convulted and complicated, but it worked for me.

Regards.

Where did you folks get the Windows Atlas from? Don't have the Windows version but I can poke at it if I get a copy. I've only worked with it on Linux, but I understand Windows if I can look at the Windows version.

Hi Upkeep,

I did everything you wrote and wrote the complete paths on the command line since it didn't work at first, but I'm still getting a bug...How big is the AtlasPalette file supposed to be? Mine is around 3K.

Upkeep wrote in Mon Jan 31, 2011 9:15 pm:Then run this command: map --size=512 --glutfonts --headless --fg-root="C:\Program Files\FlightGear" --atlas="C\Flightgear\data\Atlas" --fg-scenery="C\Program Files\Flightgear\Scenery" --palette="C:\temp1\AtlasPalette"

That's just right. It's not like a regular palette in e.g. GIMP, just listing colour values and names. Instead it is a listing of all materials (i.e. what texture there is on the ground) and the colour they should be given, and also elevations and colours for them. Try open it in a text editor, it's a text file.

Dear 439Tiger:

I have to say I am a bit puzzled that it did not work. I did notice that you included three locations covering where your Flightgear scenery. Suggest you try again with just one location - the primary one, the one where all the scenery tiles are.

If that does not work, suggest you try substituting --fg-root="C:\Program Files\FlightGear" with --fg-root="C:\Program Files\FlightGear\data"

I notice you are running Windows 7 as I am. I assume you have just the 32 bit version of Flightgear 2.0.0 and have not got the 64 bit add-on. I have the add on and my main Flightgear file is at
C:\Program Files(x86)\FlightGear rather than C:\Program Files\FlightGear. Might be just worth checking this.

Also, I am assuming you are trying to install Atlas 0.3. rather than the newer version 0.5. Please see the earlier subject post just above this one on 0.5, where you will see I had a lot of problems installing 0.5 but got there in the end. If you look at that post from the bottom of page 2 onwards it might help a bit.

I hope the installation works OK for you.

Best wishes

Hi Upkeep,

I did the modifications you suggested but had to add the second path for the scenery for anything to happen:

Code: Select all
map --size=1024 --glutfonts --verbose --fg-root="C:\Progr
am Files\FlightGear\data" --atlas="C:\Program Files\FlightGear\data\Atlas" --fg-
scenery="C:\Program Files\FlightGear\scenery;C:\Program Files\FlightGear\data\Sc
enery" --palette="C:\Temp1\AtlasPalette"

And now I get this error, it seems that the palette file I have is missing some materials:

That is actually quite normal... :| When I first run map.exe I had redirected the error stream to a separate file, in case there should be any interesting there. I deleted it as it did become tens of mebabytes of such error messages.

Thing is, you do not need a separate colour for every material or kind of terrain, for every material that doesn't have a colour defined in the palette Atlas will use the elevation shading and ignore that material. However Atlas will give those warnings anyway.

To sum it up: You can ignore those warnings about unknown materials. Take them as an indication that Atlas has begun to run. :D

If Atlas have begun to run, I can assure you it does not run fast.

Wow! That's going to take while. Though my computer should be about half as fast, from looking at the specs in your profile, running map on my with only two or three 10 x 10 degree tiles took something between 15 minutes and an hour (my memory is a bit weak here). Running the entire world... :?

Fortunately I did not get these materials errors when I installed Atlas. However, if it is now working, that is very good news.

You may want to consider generating the maps for about an hour and then trying things out to ensure it is working, ie opening Flightgear and Atlas at an airport where the new Atlas tile has been generated.

I only say this because for all my Atlas maps to be generated took about 10 hours on my machine and I have around 25%-30% of the world scenery max. So it could take you a couple of days to complete! I found it took longer doing 1024 maps than 512 by the way.

I see you may be considering 0.5.0 version. I have to say I do prefer this newer version and the maps generated much quicker. Though as you will see from the post I mentioned before I had quite a time getting it working, ie getting the Atlas maps to generate. I did compile notes at the end so I could do it again if I had to, and when I read them I realise there was a massive amount of duplication (ie same files copied to a number of locations as I tried to master it!), but it did work in the end.

I am happy to PM these 0.5.0. notes to you if they help. On the other hand I expect you just want to complete the 0. 3.0 exercise first!!!

Anyway, I hope you have success.

Regards

Upkeep.

*facepalms* I realize now that the reason I and 439Tiger see them is the --verbose switch.
