I won't call myself a cyclist, but I go out and pedal a bit. I have a 1992 vintage Bianchi steel frame road bike (that I bought new.) I always thought it was a pretty cool bike until all these carbon fiber frames started showing up ... now it looks pretty ancient and clunky by comparison. 2 years ago I logged a lot of miles; last summer I got out maybe once. This year I've promised myself to get out and log lots of miles again. My route goes past 2 different dairy queens so I don't exactly have a Lance Armstrong build.
I try to have fun with it ... it's a way I can push myself and try to stay in a little bit of shape. And I like that it's relatively low impact as long as you steer clear of crashing.
I've put a few upgrades into the bike ... new seat, new helmet, new gloves, new wheels, and a few things, and it hasn't made me the slightest bit faster. I suppose losing 20-30 lbs from my mid-section would help a lot more than shaving a few ounces off with a new carbon fiber frame -- so I haven't bothered shopping for a new bike.
I also have an old beat up mtn bike that I'll hop on if I need to run a quick local errand and don't need to carry much. It's a hand-me-down from my younger brother, but I've put just enough into it to keep it running.
I have a friend who's a serious semi-pro cyclist who laughed and laughed at this picture. Here I got a flat and was trying to fix it ... eventually called my wife because it turned out I had the wrong spare tube, but he said it looked like I shed parts for the last 100m before I came to a stop.
