Virtual FSweekend Hackathon on Nov 5/6/7 2021

Postby vanosten » Wed Sep 29, 2021 4:53 pm

Hi Folks,

Like last year the FSWeekend at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands has been cancelled due to COVID-19. Therefore, we would like to invite to another Virtual FSWeekend Hackathon on the weekend of November 5/6/7.

You can read more about what a hackathon is, the setup and other details on Virtual FSweekend Hackathon 2021.

The hackathon is not only for hard-core C++ development. You are welcome to participate if you want to sneak peak in core development or are working/want to work on related generic functionality like Addons, osm2city, visuals etc. Your willingness to contribute and socialise is the most important asset. There will be persons helping you out. After all: we are all constantly discovering how broad and diverse the FlightGear ecosystem is :-)

If you want to sign-up, then please contact me either on this forum post, by PM on the forum or by PM on the FlighGear Discord server. If you are in doubt, do the same.

If you have an idea, then please have a look at the wiki article regarding Hackathon 2021 Ideas. I want to stress that coming with an idea is not a pre-requisite - you will be able to choose an idea/team to join.

I hope to be able to virtually welcome many of you in during the first weekend of November!

I've made this topic a Global Announcement, to encourage more people to take part.

The last Hackathon was great fun, and I'm sure this is going to be even more successful. This is a great opportunity to start hacking FlightGear with lots of on call support, as well as get to know members of the FlightGear developer community. So if you've got an idea of something cool, or even if there's just something that niggles you that you'd like to fix, sign up and come along.

Hi,
it's my intention to partecipate the Virtual FSweekend Hackathon on Nov 5/6/7 2021 and I also put an idea: https://wiki.flightgear.org/Hackathon_Proposal:_User_Profile

Whereas my idea will be considered or not I will anyway enjoy to partecipate and start to contribute as Developer for FlightGear. My coding is a bit rusted since I do not touch c/c++ code from 10 years, but I started my carrier as Software Developer and I did it for the 5 years of my carrier always in aerospace field.

For a quick presentation of myself you can have a look at my Aircraft Development thread here: https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=39659

Cheers,
S.

Good morning!

Four weeks to go to the Hackathon and I cannot wait. We have currently 10 participants - but there is room for more. This is a safe learning and socialising environment, so no reason to be shy/believe you are not "core" enough.

We have currently 9 proposed ideas. They present a large variety of topics in the FG ecosystem from core "engineering" over input handling, scenery improvements to texturing.

Thank you very much to those of you who already contributed with ideas and with their participation to lay the foundation. And welcome to you, who gets persuaded to join :-)

Hi Anwar

The Hackathon's purpose is a bit different I guess - but I might be wrong and you are still welcome. Can you please tell a bit more in details, what you mean be "developing some sceneries" and "need a permission"?

Hi,
I would also like to join. Volador had the idea to make the boat models from TerraSync bob / oscillate like real boats do (right now, they simply sit in one place or turn in circles). I was successful in implementing the basic oscillation, but all boats of the same model are oscillating simultaneously. I need some advice / help / ideas on how this could be implemented, and as I was unsuccessful on the forum, I thought the Hackathon would be a good idea for this, as it might also require some core FG changes (maybe something similar like the interactive jetways - Airports/A/B/C/ABCD.jetways.xml ?). But I cannot promise to be able to take part in the Kick-off / final presentation because of the timezones - that is rather late for me.

Hi TheEagle

I suggest that you start with writing your idea down in a bit more words and maybe link to the forum thread. The format of writing down etc. is as per https://wiki.flightgear.org/Virtual_FSw ... 1#Ideation. You might want to include things like differentiating between boats in harbours etc.

An idea is only being worked on, if it is presented in the Hackathon kick-off and if someone actually commits to working on it. If you cannot make it and do not find a "sponsor" taking over the presentation of the idea etc., then some aspects of a Hackathon would go away. You can always write to the core devs on the mailing list - just make sure that you are quite specific and already can show, what is working. However, please consider taking part in the Hackathon and be up a bit late next weekend.

BTW: thanks to day-light-savings being removed this weekend, next weekend it will not be that late.

Well, I will see what I can arrange - maybe Volador can take over the presentation (actually, it was his idea).

I'm very sorry but I'll have to withdraw the proposals of buildings/tree textures and metar influences on static boats and ships due to time constraints (for the Hackathon at least). Any objections should be taken up with my wife but I wish you luck with that ;) - sorry again but we've just got too much on. However, if you're all meeting face to face on jitsi it would be great to put some names to faces and listen to introductions on the first evening.

Actually, some folks suggested previously to record (screen grab) some portions of the hackathon (e.g. project introductions/demos etc) so that such materials can be reused in the future (hackathon writeup, newsletter, future hackathons etc) - in the future, we could also modify the corresponding wiki template to support embedded youtube videos for people wanting to introduce their ideas that way (which could be rather compelling compared to a static writeup)

In other words, even if people are not into being recorded, preparing a video presentation/demo to introduce an idea/proposal might be helpful. Think of it like an annotated powerpoint presentation using a bunch of screen shots/comments to pitch your idea.
Please don't send support requests by PM, instead post your questions on the forum so that all users can contribute and benefit
Thanks & all the best,
Hooray

I am withdrawing my participation at the Hackathon because I have found a solution for the bobbing boats.

Hi TheEagle,

You can still take part - part of the fun is doing different things and taking part in other people's projects.

Yeah, let's see. I have found a solution, but it partly relies on cmdarg and I was just told it is fragile … so some further work would be good. I will see what I can do.
