Can't buy a GPU? 3 alternative upgrades

Buying a GPU right now is a bleak prospect, as everyone knows. And if you’ve been sitting on a pile of cash earmarked for a new graphics card, it can feel especially painful.

With no end to the chip shortages in sight, a PC building enthusiast might be stumped on how to rev up their gaming PC (and frankly, a little more than depressed). But you can improve your experience in other key ways.

Nvidia GPU-powered devices are seriously expensive in the UK right now. I am going to buy a device with an Intel Iris GPU. In theory at least it's actually faster than my current entry level Nvidia GPU; in practice, we'll see!

Why would I buy a cheap second hand GPU, without a laptop to go with it?

And no, I'm not, but it claims to support OpenGL 4.6, which is the same as my current GPU.

My most recent Windows 10 NUC has an Intel Iris Plus 655 & it reports OpenGL 4.6 - on FG 2020.3.11 at BIKF with the c172p & everything except for trees at max (they are at medium) it gets 15-20fps

It's not fantastic but it seems to support all the shaders under windows - Linux is a bit different: faster but some shaders like grass aren't supported (all Open Source Mesa drivers fail on the same shaders inc Intel)

That's better than I thought! The Iris Plus is the 8th generation (as far as I know) -- the Iris Xe comes with the Tiger Lake (11th gen) processors and is meant to be 100% faster again than the Iris Plus. 19fps is only slightly less than I get on my Nvidia card. Actually, it's more than I get with overlay turned on (17 fps) but less than overlay turned off (25 fps).

I heard that Intel cards have less trouble with overlay shaders, is that true?

Its amazing how far Intel cards have progressed :)

Sure ? Because AMD and nVidia made progress too and Intel GPU is still lowend. Performance of the 7 years old GTX750 is very similar to Iris XE. Bit older Iris plus G7 has only half of the GTX750's performance.
If You will buy device with Iris XE, You will not have any performance reserve for the new FG features. It will be the same mistake as I made 2 years ago with the GTX1060, I should have bought GTX1080.
