Frankly, the rather clear reflection of the plane on the less than still water looks a bit odd...

I think the water disturbance behind the aircraft, especially after it calms down, looks too much like salt water froth than fresh water. The higher speed wake has some fairly fake looking portions also. I'm just surprised with the money and talent they surely have, that it isn't a couple notches better. Yet there are some subtle effects I really like, like the water going over the pontoons when mostly just floating and when at higher speed, the effect right adjacent and under the pontoon looks really good.

Yeah, I also noticed the major cloud reflection and what looked like perfectly flat, still water when approaching. Yet on final and landing, it was not flat at all. I guarantee that particular lake NEVER looks like that. It is a dirty brown most of the time and with the prevailing wind we get here, rarely is it that calm.

One major miss, in my opinion, is the FDM portion, or is it WDM, water dynamic model. It completely missed the "getting on step" portion of a water takeoff and landing. That is something that really impressed mw with FlghtGear's implementation. Kudos AnderG and I realty mean that!

Next up Cub Crafter X Cub with Floats.

Some more visuals of the water effect in strong wind. Look towards the end of the video for a side view showing how far off the sync is between the aircraft and the water. No real relationship at all.

A little comparison. It's nice to compare and see areas that can stand to be improved as well as see what's done right.

I noticed our water shader effect is not driven in the direction of the wind? Has this always been like this or is something broken? Can it be corrected?

Actually (if you wait long enough there are looong transients to avoid really odd visuals in gusty winds) it used to be - while it actually should not. Regardless of the wind direction, the effect of the shallower depth close to the shore refracts the waves so that they come parallel to the shore no matter the wind direction, and we lack that effect.

For me I think it worked in 2018.x
But since long ago, the water shader does weird things for me, like very fast movements in nearly calm wind; and very aprupt changes in direction (ie one frame) based on view angle.

here's the above linked video embedded so we can watch it from here...

that channel also has similar for Dunedin and Gibraltar...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Sorry to revive this thread, but I was reading through it recently and saw how many people were speaking negatively about MSFS a couple months after it released, but it's insane just how far the sim has come after nearly two years. That real life comparison video is honestly really impressive to say the least. The real world weather in the sim replicates real life weather beautifully. Although FG can look really good at its max (Ortho, OSM, Compositer Shadows, Highest shader settings, etc.), it is still miles behind this absolute beast of a simulator.

I have to agree. I mistook a screenshot from MSFS for a real photo not just once ! :) But from another perspective, FGFS is incredibly advanced, considering that it was (and is) developed by a handful of people in their spare time, for free ! And who knows, maybe one day not too long in the future we'll also have PBR and HDR ! :)

What's amazing is that FG already has experimental HDR and PBR on the nightly branches. The future doesn't seem too far away. ;)

Well, did you try it out already ? For me, with the HDR compositor, FG always crashes, even in the middle of the ocean ! :(

AFAIK, HDR doesn't work on Mac, which is my main system. But yes, I've gotten it to work on my other windows machine.
