New Flightgear fan website

Postby MarisaG » Sun Oct 29, 2017 12:23 pm

Hi! I have set up two official multiplayer servers, one in Japan, and decided to set up a fansite on that one to not waste the resources for just the sim. The website has a community, forum, links, and two kinds of marketplace. If you have real items to sell you can create an advert in the classified section. If you have digital goods you can set prices and upload them and people can buy them directly from you.

Would love to meet new friends!

I don't like the idea of selling airplane models.

You don't have to do it if you do not like it, but it's quite legal to sell GPL content (provided that the source is accessible) or to create and sell non-GPL aircraft for FG.

The GPL encourages unlimited redistribution of software, but distribution has real costs (server space, bandwidth, copying to physical media, postage, time, electricity, etc.) However, it becomes impossible to differentiate between covering 'distribution' costs and 'selling' software. The GPL doesn't even try and just allows reselling. (But of course all the other terms and conditions of the GPL must be honored in the process.)

Yes, my service is mainly for people who want to get some remuneration for their work. Charging only a dollar or two would be quite acceptable I think...

FlightGear has an established 20 year culture of making all our best work available for free download under open-source licensing terms. Those that wish to charge exclusively for their work probably won't find a huge market (given so much free and open-source competition) and I suspect they wouldn't need a 3rd party site taking a percentage cut from their business, but who knows ... the world is always changing.

After looking at the site, I would like it to be clear that the "Donation" area is donations for the third party site and not FlightGear, unless it is going to FlightGear.

I think it says it is for the website. If flightgear has a PayPal address I would love to list it on my site. Does it?

Also, thanks for pointing out it was taking a percentage - that was not intended and I will remove it...
