Avoiding contributing to SEO for the Flight Pro Sim scam

Postby Hooray » Wed Oct 21, 2015 10:53 am

Split off from the topic No shadows in FSX or FG 3.0 what's with these modern sim.

actually, it is most likely due to how SEO and search engine indexing works: Thorsten is likely to have used the exact same search tems that he is using on the forum when posting/describing his screen shots, but also on the wiki/website when documenting/writing about his work.

Given that both, the forum and the wiki, are hosted using the flightgear.org TLD, this is giving tons of weight to those search terms.

This is also how the "Canvas Widgets" article on the wiki ended up getting 20k+ views within a few months, because people looking for JavaScript/HTML5 Canvas related code snippets, ended up at our wiki accidentally.

Which is a good reminder for why people should stop posting certain links here (FPS scams) and use certain terminology ("flight pro sim is a scam and a rip off") instead.

Very good point.

Is bombing allowed? Ie, linking using text "scam and ripoff" in place of url, until searching scam and ripoff will give FPS as top? :P

The point, I guess, is to get potential targets of the scammers on this page: FlightGear Flight Pro Sim Statement. Or the wiki page: Flight Pro Sim. Such links with such text helps our statement rank higher in search rankings, so someone web searching for 'Flight Pro Sim' will end up seeing the statement. It is currently the second hit on Google :) And it looks like:

FlightGear Flight Pro Sim Statement (v1.4a)
http://www.flightgear.org/flightprosim.html
These "new" simulators are simply a rebranding of the FlightGear open-source flight
simulator. However, the marketing tactics of the Flight Pro Sim guys have ...

It is also currently 2nd on Bing. But does not show up on Yahoo search. I wonder what it will take to get this statement as number 1! So the point is to link and cross-link only to our pages/articles, and never to them, but to mention their name with lots of useful keywords as much as possible.

Actually a youtube video presenting it as a total scam, then linking to it from everywhere, would also help to counter it in the video searches. Or more articles on external web sites talking about the scam and linking and cross-linking to FlightGear Flight Pro Sim Statement and Flight Pro Sim. I.e. flood them out of the market so that the scammers disappear into the search engine noise.

Anyway, this is drifting quite far off the original topic! Moderator?

Regards,
Edward

Edit: Using the link+text Flight Pro Sim - Official would also help knock them down ;)
Edit2: Disliking their Youtube scam ads would also help. They've blocked comments, but can always be disliked.

The search engine crawlers are probably smart enough to work out when something is being talked about, as opposed to just being mentioned in passing because it's a related topic (i.e. they can pick up the difference between the two relationships below?). Linking to the right thing does make all the difference!

The FlightGear community very carefully makes sure that there are no links whatsoever to the Official Flight Pro Simulator homepage (note the trick url point back to our statement ;)). That's why they will be instantly deleted here or on the wiki. FlightGear is much higher ranked than FPS, so links back to them will pull them up in search rankings. Anyway, those figures should be modified to eliminate the FG statement to FPS homepage link, as the trick is to avoid that link like the plague!

Edward

Edit: Or maybe replace the arrow between the two with a big stop sign?

There should also be no links to Pro Flight Simulator either.
