Actually it based on the
Faller Car System, made for cars on model railway layouts, and of course strongly modified by the MIWULA people. Each vehicle (in this case each plane) has batteries and one or more electric motors - that's why the wheels on some planes seem a little too big.
The whole thing is controlled by a main computer that knows the position of each vehicle or plane, and can transmit signals - like setting the desired speed - at certain points in the track (I don't know how exactly this is done). Steering is done by a magnet at the tip of a flat lever on the nose wheels - this can be seen in some parts of the video. The magnet simply follows a steel wire hidden in the pavement.
The runway has a slot along the centerline. Underneath is a powered sled running on massive steel rails. The sled can extend two bars that can be controlled individually and fit into holes in the underside of the planes (
see this diagram). For taking off, the plane has to be positioned above the bars, and then the sled takes control. After landing the bars are retracted and the car system takes over again. Out of view, the departed planes are lowered onto a track, so they can get into a hidden queue for landing (and probably into a storage area).
I hope this was at least partly understandable...
