Riving an old thread here.
The Miniatur Wunderland is now on Google Street View:

If you can't make it in real life (you should really try harder, it's absolutely worth the visit), visit it virtually.

For the both of us obviously through nearly pure magic, at least according to a certain Clarke.[1]

if one looks closely enough, they can easily see the wires and cables ;)
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Actually it based on the Faller Car System, made for cars on model railway layouts, and of course strongly modified by the MIWULA people. Each vehicle (in this case each plane) has batteries and one or more electric motors - that's why the wheels on some planes seem a little too big.

The whole thing is controlled by a main computer that knows the position of each vehicle or plane, and can transmit signals - like setting the desired speed - at certain points in the track (I don't know how exactly this is done). Steering is done by a magnet at the tip of a flat lever on the nose wheels - this can be seen in some parts of the video. The magnet simply follows a steel wire hidden in the pavement.

The runway has a slot along the centerline. Underneath is a powered sled running on massive steel rails. The sled can extend two bars that can be controlled individually and fit into holes in the underside of the planes (see this diagram). For taking off, the plane has to be positioned above the bars, and then the sled takes control. After landing the bars are retracted and the car system takes over again. Out of view, the departed planes are lowered onto a track, so they can get into a hidden queue for landing (and probably into a storage area).

I hope this was at least partly understandable...

Just stumbled upon this video. Apparently Knuffingen International Airport is a Transoceanic Abort Landing (TAL) site: ;) :D

WOW! Jesus Christ! Like, I may have expected some cool videos of intense landings, small airstrips, etc on this forum, but bumping into this thread really struck me. I absolutely adore how realistic this looks, how much it seems like an actual airport. How is this done? Who does this? I have so many questions right now!

Edit: If I had one of these miniature things:

I'd put a small camera on it and make it support VR.
