Favorite Scenery/Custom scenery

Postby Random » Mon Nov 20, 2023 9:58 am

Hey folks, "random" question/

What's your favorite scenery/custom scenery?

I saw a post saying "What's your favorite Aircraft so i guess this is a spinoff.

I want to see and try all your custom favorite scenery and maybe find one that'll be my new favorite :D.

1st of all, please use gender neutral ways of addressing people (ie. folks instead of guys), not everyone here is masc!

We really like WS3.0 scenery with project open ortho.

Please use gender neutral terms when referring to a group of people!

Hm, this is where gender neutral language starts to fail:
"We" in this case is merspieler, not the FlightGear community as a whole.

Hey Merspieler,

I'll gladly change the "guys" into "folks" if you want, but note the fact that I use words like "guys" to refer to a group of people, regardless of gender.
So hopefully the next time I make a slip up you'll remember this fact.

That could be an option, otherwise I don't see an easy way to prevent possible confusion.

not to mention that "guys" has been used for decades in a non-gender specific manner...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Hmm !

Although I can't say I'd be as easily persuaded by the (mis)use of 'we', it seems to cohort a plurality into one's statements.

Actually it's not even a misuse of "we"... when someone of us writes here and uses "we" they actually mean more than one of us/all of us

This is actually interesting but needs to be moved to an appropriate thread.

I did a search on guys (seems how that is what people do now days). If you go past the definition it does indeed say...
guys. [plural] (informal) a group of people of either sex. Come on, you guys, let's get going!

But I have to admit, I cringe now when I hear it used that way as I have it ingrained in my mind that guys is indeed a group of guys! Same as I have it ingrained the we is plural.
Also we would have to have a debate on who gets to decide what the definition should be and all the variations below the definition. :)

For the purpose of this topic, I can't distinguish a favorite custom scenery. Before much more custom scenery was developed I was partial to my Kansas scenery because of the accuracy of waterways, towns, roads and rail and even the land use as it was using NLCD that was of a high enough resolution to do agricultural and forested land justis. By forested I am referring to natural terrain as well a windbreak type growth.

David's entire North American scenery is far superior to the original North American scenery and such a long overdue and welcome addition.
Kansas and Ohio/Midwest scenery development.

@wlbragg - Thank you for the kind words. You're right that it's hard to choose: any custom scenery that focuses on a small region is able to cover detail in that area much better than my scenery can, since I'm building for tens of millions of square kilometres and can't easily support special cases and local tweaks (for example, my Saskatchewan still shows generic crops instead of endless wheat fields). At the other end of the spectrum, my scenery is optimised for VFR flight below 10,000 ft, so while it works at higher altitudes (and still provides nice variety), it probably has too much detail for someone flying virtual passenger jets at 40,000 ft.

@merspieler - I hear you, and will avoid "guys" in this forum.

Good question.

My favorite custom sceneries are:

Deepest mine at open sky in Mirny by HerbyW. Caterpilar mining with friends.

Calafate. Perlan high altitude glider by HerbyW is an amazing natural scenery on FG, custom basic airport with the plus of interactive elements in a complete mission attempt.

These two scenarios cited above are very well suited to online events, so if anyone participating in the weekly Wednesday flight is reading these lines, you can consider it as a suggestion. Since they are very fun but little-known experiences.

Marc Kraus, Lake of Constance Hangar. GP Circuits.

On air, any of the photo-realistic / Orthophotos sceneries are superb, Canary island generate by FG Julia give us great quality experience.

Also like bombable sceneries, where a simple tiny vehicle on the ground make a big difference on the perception. 8)

Hey Michat,

I do love the GP circuits, since I am a big E-tron driver.
I haven't heard of the Canary Island scenery made by FG Julia, so I'll look for it. I'm a big island fan too.

I never expected my post to create a discussion about gender, I'll try to post carefully next time, but I can't guarantee a full 100% gender correct post.

I haven't gotten used to worrying about pronouns, so sorry again for that mistake.

Its NOT a mistake.
In fact this demand that we all conform to one person's whims about pronouns is decidedly political.

In total contravention of the one forum Rule

so there is absolutely no need to apologise IMHO

BTW my favourite scenery is the photorealistic area around Nice, France
