C/2022 E3 "Green Comet"

Postby wlbragg » Wed Feb 01, 2023 11:01 pm

Has anyone been able to see the comet yet? I tried last night around midnight but between the moon and the thin, patchy cloud cover I couldn't find it. But early this morning 4:30am I was able to see it with binoculars just below Polaris, partway between the big dipper and the little dipper.

Yeah, it was just a faint smudge looking through binoculars.

Too bad, i don't have any binoculars right here … do you think a camera with 30x optical zoom will do ?

worth trying, as 30x is better than the 7.5x of binoculars

- tripod recommended!
- time delayed shooting (not sure, how it is called on your camera) preferred, so you don't have to touch (and shake!) the camera
- if there is a manual mode, try with a time, which does not spoil the show due to earth rotation
- try with low ISOs, but if you need more, live with it. Not that important, as being told on the internet ("OMG, noise in the picture.")

Cloud cover here - only 50 000 years waiting for next time

ONLY 50000 years, you are good …
But from what I hear in the radio, it'll be visible for a couple days, so you might have a chance ! :)

I saw it again this morning, EARLY this morning. The moon is up all night and was sitting on the horizon around 5:00 am. I saw even less of a smudge than the other day. Would have tried my camera but it was around 6 deg f with the wind chill this morning. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow morning.

I'm not sure if I could get anything with my camera. Although I did get some "great" shots of Neowise a couple years back. It was considerably brighter.

I was kinda hopeful tonight as we had clear skies all day after 8/8 cloud cover the whole week - but close to sunset faint Cirrostratus clouds kept creeping up and with the full moon out the combination is devastating - the whole sky has a bright background :(

I've done some search with the binoculars, but sadly no result (pointing the 20 cm telescope isn't worth shit if I can't even see the fainter constellations properly to aim it...)

unless you are in rural area far from cities, you can't see more than just dots in the sky, and full moon and bright sky doesn't help. i tried with a 30x camera too (no reflex) but manual mode and time you can get something.need a astronomy app to find it
