transforming helicopters; freefall/crash make death proof

Postby rico001 » Thu Feb 13, 2020 12:53 am

Got into a discussion about helicopter crashes and autorotation. Was wondering if when a helicopter was crashing or the engine shut off, could someone design one where wings pop out to help it glide to the ground or I thought of bumpers/some type of shield to protect the canopy;

So ideas to make safer:

transform to glider -- so it can safely glide to ground....
have bumpers come out in freefall
airbag in cockpit
drop a cushion out to crash on?

There was a M.A.S.K. kids toy in 1985 that was a plane that transformed into a helicopter, called switchblade...

I was thinking of making prototype ideas.... maybe just imaginary for now... Was thinking if a helicopter could transform to a glider when engine quit as an idea it would be safer

I actually found info about one the news the military has a helicopter that changes to a car, called black knight: https://www.popularmechanics.com/milita ... -16883148/

They have supposed reasonably break proof "break proof" rc planes, drones, and toys. It would be cool to save lives... am overtired today...

autorotation

An engine failure would actually allow for a safe landing already using auto-rotation. Many of our helicopters are already capable of practicing this emergency.

You can have a Parachute safety system fitted to the rotorhead, much like the system you can get on light aircraft.

For more information about such parachutes, you can see here: https://zefhir.eu/ It is as far as I know the only company using them yet.

But also, adding to the above, helicopters can actually "glide" quite well using autorotation, when watching videos you can see quite long flight times after the engines have been shut off. See https://youtu.be/pzWw5U3eCok?t=86
