FSWeekend 2010

FSWeekend, the largest flight simulation event in the world is coming up again. As in previous years, the event will be organized in the Aviodrome, the aviation museum at Lelystad (EHLE) airport, in the Netherlands. This year, the event will be held on Saturday 6, and Sunday November 7. As in previous years, flightgear will be present again. Last year FlightGear had one of the larger booths, and a pretty good show. We certainly hope to be able to improve upon that one.

In addition to FSWeekend, a number of people, have coined the idea of organizing a developer meeting / conference to coincide with FSWeekend. As booth organizers we are supportive of that idea, but unfortunately we lack the resources to assist in organizing such an event. Speaking from past experience we do know that such meetings are typically a lot of fun, and we would most definitely welcome anybody who would like to join or participate in such an event.

In any case, if you happen to be around and have some time available, please stop by for a quick chat with one of our booth staff members, and share your
FlightGear experience with us. As things stand, we will have internet access again this year, so if you can't make it in person, try to get online and stop by at the virtual counterpart of EHLE or EHAM, or any of the airports in the vicinity.

Hope to see you all in large numbers! :-)

Cheers,
Durk

And a little reminder for those that didn't notice this topic yet.

Additional to what Durk posted there are two important links:
- the TransGear event that is held throughout the weekend.
- the special wiki pagewhere we collect all info.

Hope to see you (virtually) in Lelystad!

I am very proud to announce that German hardware vendor Thomas-Krenn AG has sponsored a workstation to help us present the latest and coolest features of FlightGear at this year's FSWeekend. The machine specs are, well, insane:

dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5690 @ 3.47GHz, total of 24 cores
12GB RAM
four nvidia GTX460 with 2GB RAM each.
enough harddrive space, sound, DVD, etc., etc.

Image
Size does matter!

Image
Several fans to keep temperature low. And four GTX460 in the expansion bay.

Image
How many DVI adaptors do you count? Yes, eight!

We met the nice guys of Thomas-Krenn AG at this year's LinuxTag where we were almost booth neighbours. Durk, Martin and I visited the their headquarter a few weeks ago. We received a very warm welcome and had the oppertunity to visit the entire company.

If you are in the need for professional server- or workstation hardware, you might want to consider visiting http://www.thomas-krenn.com/ and support our supporters.

If you were still looking for an excuse to fly into Amsterdam and visit FSWeekend, this machine definitely is one!

Great hardware and certainly a nice sponsor you acquired for this event.
But can fgfs use all these available threads?
My change from a e8400 to i7-860 did not got my to much extra fps.

Best regards, Oliver

At least building from source is faster than anything I've seen before.
Compilling plib, OSG, SimGear and FlightGear from scratch takes no longer than 2-3 minutes.

Wait, wouldn't that depend on your internet speed, not the computer's speed? Your doing GIT right?

FYI "Compiling" is a technical term for the process of turning source code into object code (and often linking the result into an executable file). Internet is usually not involved in this.

But you would have to download all the data from GIT yes?

Yes, or copy it from another box. However, since Torsten said "Compilling plib, OSG, SimGear and FlightGear from scratch takes no longer than 2-3 minutes." the timing refers to the compilation process and not the total time required for fetching the source and data, configuring the source etc. As a comparison it takes slightly less than 6 minutes to compile OSG alone on my (now old) box with a Q9400 quad core.

After some fiddeling with xorg.conf, and grabbing all monitors I could find in my house, I finally managed to get seven displays up and running, all connected to the single machine (the laptop is standalone, of course). I had roughly 40fps, just sitting on the runway. The GPU temperature went up to a steady 60-80degC during the approx. 20min test run. The CPU's were more or less idle during this time. I compilled OSG just for fun while FlightGear was running without any noticeable impact on framerate.

Image
No! It's not a tripple-head-to-go. Note the two rotated widescreen displays.

Torsten,

Have you tried setting some OSG multithreading option? With that many GPUs and cores there should be potential for parallelism. It will break the screenshot function, however.

In preferences.xml:
Code: Select all
   <!-- multithreading-mode>AutomaticSelection</multithreading-mode -->
   <!--
Uncomment the above element to select OSG multi-threading mode.
This may improve performance on multi-core, multi-CPU
and/or multi-GPU systems. The recommended setting is AutomaticSelection.
     The alternatives are
       AutomaticSelection
       DrawThreadPerContext
       CullDrawThreadPerContext
       CullThreadPerCameraDrawThreadPerContext

NOTE: Enabling this option currently breaks the screenshot function.
   -->

Cheers,

Anders
