FlightGear World Scenery 2.0 released

The FlightGear world scenery development team is happy to announce the release of the FlightGear world scenery, version 2.0, today. This new scenery reflects a major improvement over the existing default world scenery and has taken over five years to complete. A much higher level of detail and internal consistency characterizes this new release, in addition to the fact that it will serve as a stepping-stone for further incremental refinements. Although there are currently still a number of known issues with the scenery, the overall flying experience is significantly improved, and the team aims to provide patches for these issues in the near future. The completed build is currently transferred to the terrasync servers and will appear there over the next couple of days. Once the complete build is uploaded it will also be available for download via http://www.flightgear.org

This FlightGear World Scenery was compiled from:
- ViewFinderPanoramas elevation model by Jonathan de Ferranti
- VMap0 Ed.5 worldwide land cover
- CORINE land cover 2006v16 for Europe
- Several custom land cover enhancements
- The latest airports (2013.10), maintained by Robin Peel of X-Plane
- Line data by OpenStreetMap

The release was brought to you by, among others, in some mysterious order:

John Holden
Olivier Jacq
Vic Marriott
Julien Nguyen
Gijs de Rooy
Christian Schmitt
Martin Spott
James Turner

Special thanks deserve, in alphabetical as well as chronological order:

Markus Metz for enabling GRASS GIS to process huge vectors
Pete Sadrozinski for overhauling much of TerraGear, FlightGear's Scenery toolchail.

Thanks to all those involved. We know how hard it was to make this available and all the effort it took to transition to the new system. Finally we're here, after all the years of waiting, and we know that without contributions from all those involved this wouldn't have been possible. It's a new era for Flightgear, an era where official terrain is finally better than it's counterparts, which we hope it will remain!

With a simple calculation, we can deduce that a tile was generated with 4000 elevation points, right? So terrafit was run with -x 4000 ? I'm attempting to recover the memory footprint, since my custom terrain is using twice as many nodes, with a significant memory usage increase, without much visual difference in most places.
