ATC problems

Postby wooly » Sat Apr 24, 2021 2:39 am

i am using FG 2020.3.6 on win 10 flying Cessna 172P

Being fairly new to FG as i can now take off and land (mostly) i thought i would try using ATC.
i have registered my call sign G-BTPS have set the frequencies correctly but hear nothing. I can hear ATIS ok, so i guess there is nothing wrong with the sound settings.
Also, do i press space bar to talk? I am using a laptop with built in mic, is that causing problems. Thinking about investing in a headset, but would that make things any better?
I bet i am making a stupid mistake somewhere
thanks for any help

Not really. It is more like that the ATC (if using FlightGear offline) is not really implemented.

When online there are a few ATCs online now and then, usually at regular times at their favorite airport. Usually they prefer some kind of voice chat, like Mumble, Discord, Teamspeak, FGCom (built in into FlightGear, but sometimes having issues), or FGCom-mumble (a recent addition).

Some of the ATCs lists their planned sessions on http://flightgear-atc.alwaysdata.net, and when they are online you can find them on for example mpmap02 (as an eye icon) or mpmap04.

You might want to take a look at the FlightGear wiki article https://wiki.flightgear.org/Air_traffic_control (permalink) and fan out from the links there.

or use the new FGCom-mumble ;)
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

That is even cooler, however, I think it unfortunately still lacks adoption from ATCs so far...

We need enthusiastics trying it out in smaller groups, then finding it cool, spread the word.
