How to do formation flying in Multiplayer

Postby sim » Sun Jun 29, 2014 3:33 pm

Now this is how to really fly in multiplayer!
All we need is a team of virtual pilots as good as these guys.
Or maybe invite 'em to do a similar video using Flightgear!

Look at the pictures of the USA Tour, the cargo flight from the Carribean to Baltimore. We did that stuff with 747-8fs. I can tell you, lag kills!

In the FlightGear Italia Forum (http://flightgearitalia.forumcommunity.net) there's a virtual aerobatic team of the PAN Frecce Tricolori (I've subscribed at it) and sometimes we organize multiplayer events where we do some formation flying with the MB-339.
It's quite difficult to fly in a formation for a long time... but it's possible and great fun when it's performed well. :D

Any MB-339 formation videos Maverick?

Jabberwocky lag problem with too many big planes? Perhaps something smaller like the alphajet?
Alphajets might make a good formation?

The 747-8f is graphic wise quite light, compared to most fighter jets. And since some connections entirely broke down that day, I assume, it was more of a provider problem. But hey, we went sometimes really wingtip to wingtip with the biggies. Alas, once or twice, someone went also wingtip into wingtip ... dooh.

Yep it sure ain't easy!
Formation flying has to be one of the most demanding of pilot skills. The leader needs to be rock steady and perform aerobatic movements gradually and precisely. Other pilots have to have superb control of their planes to accurately hold position. Keeping on station requires lots and lots of practice, especially use of power to control airspeed and match exactly the formation required. Team skills to form a new formation pattern, require great coordination to synchronise planes moving station.
Those Virtual Blue Angels in the video, assuming each plane is flown by individual sim pilots, is so good. It would not be surprising to find they are all professional pilots. If not they deserve to be! :D
