Postby CW5Darnell » Wed Oct 05, 2011 12:53 pm

I am deployed and internet is NOT fast enough for MP one the large servers but we would like to play MP over a router. Can someone develope this? and not to sound picky but could someone do this in less than a week? we are trying to fly before some of us move to other places. THANK YOU and if you can get it to me I'll send a thank you pic straight from the plane in Afghanistan!! :!: :!: :!: :!:

Actually, you can use the FlightGear multiplayer server ("fgms") also on a LAN, it just requires to be running on one of the machines connected to your LAN, you could in fact run it on one of the computers running FlightGear, too. There is no separate "server" necessary. Many of us are using it regularly on a LAN.

On the other hand, "fgms" in its current form is exclusively *nix software, i.e. doesn't work on Windows AFAIK. So you'll need to set up Cygwin, CoLinux or a dedicated Linux box in your LAN to run it. Maybe you have a pretty tech-savvy colleague you could ask to handle this for you? You could ask around if somebody is using "Linux" (the operating system), once you find someone he should be able to set up a fgms server for your LAN, too.

If you cannot find a Linux box, you could instead use "Cygwin" (an emulation layer) or "CoLinux" for running fgms - the latter will run as a normal windows service in the background.

EDIT: Setting up a MP server is detailed here: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:_Set_u ... yer_server
If you find someone who is familiar with Linux, he/she should be able to set up everything rather quickly.
Downloading "coLinux" and installing "fgms" inside it shouldn't take longer than 15-30 minutes for someone who is familiar with Linux.

lol,if you are already running ubuntu why don't you just use fgms as is?
colinux is only necessary to set up a virtual linux system under Windows, if you don't have access to a Linux box on your LAN.

Yes, the way it work is basically that you first download and install "colinux" for your Windows box and then you can download a pre-configured "image" with a supported distribution, see here for choices available: http://sourceforge.net/projects/colinux/files/

fgms is hosted separately, please refer to the wiki page I posted previously, you'll find all instructions there.

I would only recommend coLinux if you don't have access to a Linux box, if you are using ubuntu already and if you know it, there is no need to run another instance of ubuntu under colinux/windows.

coLinux is really only necessary if you don't have access to a Linux box already, i.e. if all PCs on your LAN are Windows only.
CoLinux doesn't need to be compiled, it comes with a neat graphical installer.
If you are using Linux already (as it sounds), then the wiki page I linked to should get you started rather quickly.

OTOH, fgms will need to be compiled - and thus requires a compiler (such as gcc) to be installed on the Linux machine.
You may be able to find pre-built, statically linked binaries if you search the forum. But normally, compiling fgms is quick & easy.

why don't you simply follow the instructions?
Seems easy enough, no?
Static compilation will only work under some circumstances ...
