i suspect you are correct but there's more to it than that...
from what i see on my two systems, there was a (large -ish) change to the default c172p stored in fgdata...
on my old machine, c172p.ac is 6743820 bytes in size while the other machine's c172p-common.ac is 3136832 bytes in size...
that seems to indicate a pretty large change in the craft's code... a change that likely would cause problems over MP if coupled with an older-then-next FG using the original default c172p...
someone would need to dig back through the c172p's git development repo logs to find when this change took place and maybe what it was all about...
