Multiplayer with nightly Builds see C172P as a b/y Glider

Postby FoxtrotCC » Sat Apr 01, 2023 6:53 pm

Multiplayer with nightly Builds (2020.4.xx?) see a C172P from the stable Version (2020.3.xx) as a blue/yellow Glider. Multiplayer with the stable FG Version (2020.3.xx) see a C172P from nightly Builds as an C172-common standard Model. Is ist possible to change that?

I confirm.
When running 'next' with c172p checked out to branch 'release/2020.4' users on stable see me as c172-common, I see their c172p as gliders.
When I checked out 'release/2020.3' and restarted FG, it worked fine.

Didn't take notes, but I think it is how we tested during recent MP event.

I tried this out and saw the blue glider a week or so ago when it was mentioned after a Weds night event. On the second tryout the blue glider went away, probably after rebuilds all around both on the 'next' machine and on the 2020-3. Today, again, both models are showing properly as c172p from each machine.

Edit: This may be a disyance thing, if I place the 2020-3 model close enough the, from the 'next' model, it appears properly as a c172. Placing it further away presents a blue glider. So far I cannot see any effect ( on the 'next' instance ) using the AI-LOD settings.

It doesn't seem distance related, I'm wondering if it's just due to two files in the Models folder being different names:
c172p.ac and c172p.xml in 2020.3 vs c172p-common.ac and c172p-common.xml in next. I thought multiplayer gets the model name from one of those files and substitiutes the glider if there's no local match.

i suspect you are correct but there's more to it than that...

from what i see on my two systems, there was a (large -ish) change to the default c172p stored in fgdata...
on my old machine, c172p.ac is 6743820 bytes in size while the other machine's c172p-common.ac is 3136832 bytes in size...
that seems to indicate a pretty large change in the craft's code... a change that likely would cause problems over MP if coupled with an older-then-next FG using the original default c172p...

someone would need to dig back through the c172p's git development repo logs to find when this change took place and maybe what it was all about...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

I think polly is correct. The fallback model of 1 should keep a c172p model representation in the display. Does 2020-3.x have a fallback model designated?

I have another instance of 3.2.0 running on an older desktop and the blue glider is generated both ways, 2020.4.0 -> 3.2.0 and 3.2.0 -> 2020.4.0. I'm not familiar enough with the fallback code to know exactly how it is supposed to work. If the 2020.4 version has a fallback model designated, does that mean it will be seen as the fallback model to those that cannot connect correctly with it? Or AIrcraft that the model running under 2020.4 should look like the fallback model?

In the 'next' box, I modify fgdata/AI/Aircraft/fallback_models.xml for the default n=0 model from:

Code: Select all
<model n="0" type="string">/Models/Geometry/glider.ac</model>

to:
Code: Select all
<model n="0" type="string">/AI/Aircraft/c172/c-fgfs.xml</model>

then the view of the 2020-3 model changes from a glider to the c172p . I've checked the 2020-3 c172p-main.xml and the fallback model is set to 1; so that suggests to me that the 'next' box does not see
the MP fallback model index being properly received from the 2020-3 box.

Is there somewhere in the props tree that shows the MP strings received ?

Ahh,
On the 2020-3 box F10-Multiplayer-Disconnect , on the 'next, box wait until the view of the other model disappears, then reconnect 2020-3 multiplayer ( I'm using mpserver 01 )

2020-3 'Visible to all' : see blue glider
2020-3 ' Visible to 2017 + ' : see c172p

Visible to only 2017 +... Yes, this still exists too! I/we will try it on the next session.

Thanks Polly and all involved!

Yep yep !
When I shut down the laptop running 2020-3 I noticed console messages saying multplayer message truncated, I think maybe the mpserver matters too. A while back, looking at 747 AI models I preferred to select mpserver01 rather than let the menu make a random choice for me.

Visible to only 2017+ works very well for the Cessna! 2020.3.x users see 2020.4.x models and the other way round. I had completely forgotten about this setting... Thanks again!
