TACAN questions

Postby A-6 B/N » Thu May 12, 2022 4:20 pm

I've looked up the TACAN channels for a number of east coast military airfields on AirNav and have been able to get good signals for several (KNTU, KLFI) but not others (KDOV). it appears that not all TACAN channels are supported in Flight Gear. Is there any way finding out (other than by trial and error) which channels are supported?

Also, in the A-10, I can set the TACAN channel number but have-not found anything that I can click on to change from X to Y. Any suggestions?

In my nav.dat from FG2020.4 the DOV tacan is listed with the channel 37X.
But you are right, we dont have all tacans in our database.
Thats because the navaids in the nav.dat are recorded with the coupled civilian frequency and not all tacan frequencies have a coupled VHF frequency.
As example the DOV tacan is recorded with 110.00 MHz and thats the coupled frequency for channel 37X (in real the tacan on that channel work on 1.061 GHz and the ground station respond on 0.998 GHz).
But the channels 1X/Y up to 16X/Y and 60X/Y up to 69X/Y are coupled to 133.30 MHz up to 135.95 MHz, but the nav radios in FG cant set this high frequency.
The nav radios in FG stop at 117.95 because from 118.00 MHz up to 132.999 MHz is for comm radios.

I dont know if this is allready fixed but i fear not, because i cant find any tacan in the nav.dat with a frequency higher than 117.95 MHz.
