i think custom simply means "not one of the default predefined functions"...

as for customizing them, in the directory where FG writes its log file, there is a directory named "Input"... inside there you should find "Joysticks", and in there maybe another directory for your joystick brand which should then contain the xml file for the actual stick... you would edit this file to add your custom modifications to the buttons...

NOTE: that the file will not appear there unless you change one of the options and save the configuration...

NOTE2: i have the ThrustMaster T16000M but i use its default settings... if i modified it, i would find the file to edit as ~/.fgfs/Input/Joysticks/ThrustMaster/T16000M.xml on my linux systems...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
